After a lengthy joint investigation, the Bryan County Sheriff’s Department and Pembroke Police Department have dismantled an alleged prostitution ring based out of Richmond Hill.
Pembroke Police Sergeant Billy Gray headed the investigation and said the group has been operating out of the Scottish Inn in Richmond Hill "for quite a while," with customers reportedly coming from as far as Vidalia and South Carolina. He also said the ring is well established with roots in Savannah and this bust likely impacts one part of a larger organization, "but this hit a big cornerstone of it."
Four alleged ring members were arrested in a sting operation last week. Richmond Hill resident Maria Korollocke and Savannah resident Joel Ramos were arrested on April 24 and charged with pimping while Korollocke’s husband Stephen was arrested the following day on the same charges. Ramos’ girlfriend Maria Chavez was also arrested April 24 and charged with prostitution. Gray said the Korollockes have been living at the Scottish Inn "for at least a couple months."
The couple allegedly conducted the business by making initial contact with potential customers through the website craislist.org. Gray said they call their organization "Absolutely Gorgeous and it was accessible by searching the Savannah area of the site under the heading "erotic services." Gray said the listing said the company offered massages and displayed scantily clad and nude photos of women.
Gray said a sting was initiated last week when he called the number listed on the site and spoke with the Korollockes about ordering a massage. He said Stephen Korollocke indicated that it was a "full service massage" which was alleged to indicate sex was involved. Gray asked him to send a girl to a designated location in Pembroke on April 24 and Korollocke allegedly agreed to do so for a negotiated fee of $200.
Later that afternoon, Gray said Chavez, Ramos and Maria Korollocke showed up together outside the Pembroke address, which was being heavily watched by PPD and BCSO officers. The two women went inside and approached PPD Detective Daniel Woodcock, who posed as a customer.
Gray said Woodcock signaled to the other officers once he had established prostitution was the purpose of the visit and after money had exchanged hands. Gray said Ramos was outside pacing while acting as the "look-out."
All three were arrested. Gray said interviews with the three established enough evidence to get a warrant against Korollocke and he was arrested at the Bryan County Jail the following day after arriving there to post bond for his wife. Korollocke was also charged with obstruction after fighting with deputies as he was being handcuffed.
Gray said the investigation is far from over and Chavez is just one of the prostitutes in the ring.
Richmond Hill Police Department Detective Mike Albritton said prostitution is a rare crime for Richmond Hill.
"We normally do not get complaints about prostitution," he said. "When we do, it’s usually a trucker saying he got robbed and we trace it back to him being ripped of by a prostitute."
Richmond Hill police are not involved in this case.
The motel's owner, R.J. Patel, who also owns motels in Atlanta, said he was unaware of any illegal activity.
"Most of my clients are senior citizens," he said. "It's usually very quiet around here."
Here's what craigslist press representative Susan MacTavish had to say about the site being used as an avenue for illegal activities:
- The misuse of craigslist for illegal purposes is completely unacceptable to us and we are continuously devising new means of eliminating such activity.
- Craigslist is an extremely unwise choice for those who are intent on committing crimes, since criminals inevitably leave an electronic trail to themselves that law enforcement officers will follow. On a daily basis, we are being of direct assistance to police departments and federal authorities nationwide.
- We have implemented new technical measures that have reduced the number of erotic services ads by at least 80 percent, and greatly improved adherence to our terms of use in the ads that remain.
- Unlike the weekly newspapers, telephone yellow pages and numerous websites large and small that make a profitable business out of "erotic services" ads, craigslist earns no revenue whatsoever from such ads.
Measures they take to prevent crime on craigslist include:
- We ban all illegal activity in our terms of use.
- We place prominent notices on our posting forms warning against illegal activity.
- We provide a community moderation system whereby our users flag inappropriate ads for removal.
- We place prominent notices asking users to flag inappropriate ads.
- We block ads containing language that in our experience has a high likelihood of violating our terms of use.
- We remove inappropriate ads that come to our attention.
- We block persons violating our terms of use from posting.
- We maintain information pages regarding user safety on craigslist.
- We respond promptly to inquiries and requests for assistance from law enforcement officers.
- We give periodic briefings for groups of law enforcement officers on how to efficiently obtain information from craigslist.
