A Marine officer from Richmond Hill reportedly has been killed in Afghanistan.

No official notice had been released Friday by the Department of Defense, but Gary Freeman confirmed his son, Capt. Matthew Freeman, 29, has been killed. He was a pilot, but reportedly was serving ground duty in Afghanistan.

An Associated Press report Friday afternoon said a U.S. service member was killed in an attack on a convoy early Friday in the eastern part of the country. Thursday, four Marines were killed in an roadside bombing, according to the Pentagon.

Freeman was a 1998 graduate of Richmond Hill High School and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2002. His father is a senior test pilot at Gulfstream and also a Naval Academy graduate. Freeman’s mother Lisa is a teacher at Richmond Hill Middle School. His sister Ginny is attending the Naval Academy.
