Richmond Hill named 2014 Playful City

For the fifth year in a row, the city of Richmond Hill is being recognized for its initiatives in creating a community that allows children to get balanced and active play in a safe environment. Richmond Hill has been named a 2014 Playful City USA honoree by KaBOOM! and the Humana Foundation.

The city of Richmond Hill celebrated Independence Day last Saturday with live entertainment, water rides for children, vendors, fireworks and more. Thousands of community members came out to J.F. Gregory Park to enjoy music by "The Tams" and celebrate America. Tiffany Stroud was among them with her camera to document the festivities.

July 10-16: Butterflies Interactive Display - Experience the life of butterflies through this interactive display in the Center Court of the Savannah Mall Monday-Saturday, from 12-8 p.m., or Sunday from 12-5 p.m. Admission is $3, and children under the age of 8 get in free with an adult ticket purchase. Winners give prize back to charity

When the Plantation Lumber and Hardware store had an open house in May, raffle tickets were sold to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The raffle prize was an "Ultimate Big Green Egg Grill Package," which included a large grill with a lifetime warranty, a canopy tent, a $100 gift certificate and more.

June 25: Hawaiian Luau Yappy Hour - From 6-8 p.m., at the Fish Tales Restaurant at the Fort McAllister Marina the community and their dogs are invited to the Yappy Hour Hawaiian fancy dress dog competition. A beer tasting will be provided by Southern Eagle, and dogs can enjoy doggie smoothies for $3 for a small cup or $4 for large cups. Smoothie flavors include tropical honey or peanut butter blueberry. Firefighters with the Richmond Hill Fire Department stood outside Love's Truck Stop, Kroger and Food Lion for three days last week to collect donations for the nonprofit Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation. The GFBF provides fire safety and prevention education, supports medical facilities and assists burn survivors in their recovery. Tiffany Stroud took her camera along to document the event.

Urgent Care Center celebrates 5 years

Fish Tales is staple in community

Around five years ago, Butch and Sherri Broome bought the little restaurant at the marina. Now, Fish Tales Restaurant at Fort McAllister Marina has become a successful and popular spot among Richmond Hill residents and visitors – even being awarded Business of the Year from the Richmond Hill-Bryan County Chamber of Commerce this year.

Children and their families came out to The Ice Cream Stop's Movie Night Under the Stars Saturday to see the movie "Marmaduke." Many of the families enjoyed a tasty treat from the ice cream shop.
