Family hopes to welcome daughter from China

Valerie's future looked bleak in 2003, when she was placed in an orphanage in the Fuling province of China at just four months after being born. Now 10 years old, her photo shows a girl with silky black hair and doe eyes, but aside from her physical appearance, her mother, Christine Meade, knows very little about her.

Bring a chair to Rousakis Plaza in downtown Savannah and watch multiple college games in front of three large inflatable screens. Sports store changes lives not just gear

There was once a time in Sandra Elliot's life when running - her favorite form of exercise - was nearly impossible due to numbing pain in her legs and back. She underwent back surgery in 2006 following her service in the Army but said she still felt helpless and defeated by the immobilizing pain that kept her from doing the things she loved.

Aug. 17: The Color Run - Racers from all over the coastal empire and beyond will line up in Savannah's Forsyth Park for a very colorful 5k run. Runners start the race at 8 a.m. wearing white and finish wearing the colors that have been thrown on them throughout the race. The cost is $45 per solo runner and $40 for runners competing in teams. Boy Scouts gear up for fundraiser

Boy Scout Troop 527 has been in existence under its current charter for 31 years, and the Scouts have been doing a chicken dinner fundraiser for a large part of that time - according to Scoutmaster Mathew Brown, the fundraiser has been raising money for the troop for at least 20 years.

April 9: Yappy Hour Fundraiser - The Bark Park Association is having its monthly Yappy Hour fundraiser at Fish Tales Restaurant at Fort McAllister Marina from 6-8 p.m. A percentage of all proceeds will be donated to the nonprofit organization behind the Bryan County Bark Park. More than 70 people attended the Relay For Life Survivor Dinner last week at the John W. Stevens Wetlands Education Center, which honors and celebrates local cancer survivors while recognizing their caregivers. Food was donated by The Smokin' Pig, and decorated cookies were donated by Julie Chapman. Hanna Keith, featured in an ACS video "Hanna's Hope" that chronicled her fight with childhood cancer, was the guest speaker.The News' Shana Statham brought along her camera to document the folks who attended.
