Oct. 24: Military Appreciation Day - The Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair comes to Statesboro this week with carnival rides, food and fun for the whole family. Thursday, military families receive discounts on admission and entertainment. I was recently shopping for a greeting card. I am a firm believer in sending and receiving old-fashioned greeting cards by snail mail for almost every occasion, so I wanted a card for my British nephew who was about to take some important school exams.
There will be lot more cooking at the 15th annual Great Ogeechee Seafood Festival this weekend than fried shrimp and gumbo. Thanks to the Boy Scout Troop 400 of Richmond Hill, visitors to J.F. Gregory Park this Friday through Sunday will also have the chance to get a taste of something sweet with their seafood.

Oct. 10-13: Tybee Island Pirate Festival - Get ready for some swashbuckling fun with live music, children's activities and a Pirate Victory Parade. Historically, Tybee Island has hosted the Pirate Festival every Columbus Day weekend, thrilling guests with costume contests and a complete transformation of the city into a bustling pirate village. Oct. 4-6: Oktoberfest on River Street - Downtown Savannah is hosting its 30th annual weekend-long festival on the river celebrating fall, food, beer and fun. Special attractions include wiener dog races, bratwurst tasting, sausage eating contests and a River Street keg roll. There will also be live music and a Beer Garden. Thanks to summer rains that soaked coastal Georgia over the summer, pumpkins are likely to be a little harder to come by. But organizers of the annual Pumpkin Patch in J.F. Gregory Park are hoping the event will go unscathed as they plan for another popular year for the round orange gourds.

As an 11 year-old, Richmond Hill resident Maggie Batson has already discovered many life experiences – starting a business, acting in a movie and now being featured in a national magazine.
Richmond Hill High School football fans and band members traveled to Camden County on Saturday for a preseason football scrimmage between the Wildcats and Camden County High School. The regular season starts Sept. 5 for RHHS. Bryan Browning brought his camera along to show the spirit of Wildcat fans and spirit teams.
Aug. 20: AWANA Program – New Beginnings Community Church invites children ages 4 years-old up to fifth grade to their AWANA program. The fun, scripturally based program starts at 6:30 p.m., and takes place every Wednesday night. Participants can register at the church or online at www.nbcchurch.com.
The boys of fall are at it again. South Bryan County Recreation Department football got under way recently with tryouts, and hundreds of kids showed up to show coaches what they can do. The season begins soon for various age groups who will compete for local and state glory, the latter through the auspices of the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association district and state playoffs.
The trip was canceled, but that didn't stop Logan Pope from getting to Africa.
