'In Time' is fun despite plot holes

"In Time," a new science-fiction thriller in theaters now, stars Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried ("Letters to Juliet," "Red Riding Hood") as a mismatched pair living in a future version of our world. Like many sci-fi flicks these days, you have to accept the premise of the movie right away or you'll be completely confused half the time.

'Mao's Last Dancer' has art overcome oppression

This week's film combines the elements of history, dance and a far-off land into one sweeping drama. The picture is called "Mao's Last Dancer," and I found it intriguing, marvelous to watch and very inspirational. Based upon the real-life autobiography of Chinese ballet dancer Li Cunxin, the film depicts one young man's journey from rural communist China to the stage of the Houston Ballet in the United States. I dare you to watch without a box of tissues.

Possibly the best Kickstarter video ever

KICKSTARTINGDOM — It seems like everything has a Kickstarter page these days. Whether it’s raising money for your neighbor’s cat to get a holiday sweater or so a guy named Dave can get a chalupa, these pages are everywhere. All of these videos also seem to come with boring, bland and somewhat irritating videos.

Predictable 'Seventh Son' pits Jeff Bridges vs. Julianne Moore

Certain actors carry enough weight to make weak movies watchable. Think Christopher Walken in “The Rundown,” Gene Hackman in “Runaway Jury” or Liam Neeson in most anything he’s done since “Taken.”

5 movies to watch during Black History Month

February might be more strongly associated by some with Valentine’s Day (aka Singles Awareness Day), but the entire month is also dedicated to celebrating black history. Luckily, there is no shortage of great cinema involving African-American culture, struggles and accomplishments. From classics such as “Glory” and “Roots” to less obvious fare like “In the Heat of the Night,” there is something for every taste.

'SpongeBob Out of Water' is a wacky comic ride

It’s been over a decade since a talking yellow sponge made the leap from television to the big screen in 2004’s “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.” Usually a delay that long isn’t a good sign for a sequel, but fans of this zany Nickelodeon cartoon can rest assured: Your hero may still be underwater, but he's not watered down.
