Emancipation celebrated after 151 years

Wednesday's rainy weather did not dampen the spirits of members of Liberty County's African-American community, many of whom gathered on New Year's Day at Thebes African Methodist Episcopal Church in Midway to celebrate the 151st anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation's signing.

Local culinary heroes teach, inspire

I emulate Biblical role models like Joshua, David, Peter and Paul. Jesus is more than a role model. He's God. I also look up to military heroes like Francis Marion, John Singleton Mosby, Alvin York, Audie Murphy and Paul R. Smith. It's my culinary heroes, though, who teach me new recipes and inspire me to develop my own skills in the kitchen or at the grill.

Homelessness spikes after holidays

Not everyone has a home for the holidays. The homeless do exist here in Liberty County though they rarely are seen on the streets. Not all homeless find themselves on park benches, in tents or sleeping in their vehicles. Many area homeless individuals and families seek temporary lodgings at area motels or rely on family and friends to shelter them.

Stephanie Willis and her husband, Blaise, keep their home landscaped with scalloped-trimmed Indian hawthorns, a blooming sasanqua, liriope, loropetalum, agapanthus and a sago palm. The couple received a certificate from the garden club as well as a gift certificate from Tim and Dave's Nursery.
