Ribbon walk ties families to deployed soldiers

A crowd of Army spouses, children and dogs, most clad in bright yellow T-shirts, gathered under gray, drizzly skies Saturday for the Yellow Ribbon Walk on Fort Stewart. The walk marked the halfway point for the 3rd Infantry Divisions Run/Walk To and From Iraq/Afghanistan, an exercise and morale boosting initiative begun in January.

Spirit of Peace breaks ground on new home

Sixty-three members of Spirit of Peace Lutheran Church gathered on Saturday, March 27, for their historic groundbreaking service. Everyone gathered on a portion of the 4-acre property to listen to the scriptures, offer prayers of thanksgiving to God and consecrate the land for the construction of their new church home. Several adults were chosen to officially break the ground and then the children of Spirit of Peace joined in with their own trowels.

Military children enjoy post Wheels Day

Preschoolers eagerly waited for a turn to sit in the driver's seat during Wheels Day Friday on Fort Stewart. Military children from the installation's Child Development Centers were given a tour of numerous emergency and service vehicles, including a Hinesville police car, an Army humvee, a Forestry Division front-end loader and a Fort Stewart Fire Department ladder truck.

CASA to celebrate moms at luncheon

The Atlantic Area Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) will hold its second annual Mother's Day Luncheon at noon Thursday, May 6, at the Chatham Club in the Desoto Hilton Hotel. The theme is "Every Child Deserves a Good Mother." The cost is $50 per person and proceeds benefit CASA. Checks can be mailed to Savannah CASA, 428 Bull St., suite 205, Savannah, GA 31401. Garden club picks yard of month

The Richmond Hill Garden Club has selected the home of Richard Ralls at 120 Harvey Drive as the yard of the month for September. Ralls' yard has hidden gingers with white-and-lavender blooms below the leaves. It also features cast iron plants, elephant ears, nandina, ivy and salvia, all situated under sprawling oaks. A Japanese maple provides a focal point, and confederate jasmine adorns the mailbox.
