Kevin Matthews out for season

Former Richmond Hill High School baseball standout Kevin Matthews is out for the season. Matthews, the 2011 first round draft choice of the Texas Rangers underwent surgery recently. In a Facebook message, Matthews said he was "done for the season," but also noted "it was just a clean up" and "nothing too serious." Earlier, T.R. Sullivan's blog on texasrangers.com said the Rangers have lost both left-handed pitcher Kevin Matthews and outfielder Zach Cone for the season. Matthews needs surgery because of a bone spur in his left shoulder and Cone is out with a torn left Achilles ...

Limited red snapper season opens

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker recently approved a request by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries to allow limited recreational harvesting of red snapper in federal waters, according to Doug Haymans, policy coordinator with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Wildlife Rescue has busy baby season

In an effort to educate the public about what to do when finding a wild animal that may be injured or orphaned, the Georgia Wildlife Rescue Association (GWRA) has released information about the numbers and types of calls that they have received on their statewide Wildlife Hotline. Barely two months old, the toll-free number has had even more of an impact than expected. Calls average between 25 per day, but the organization reports that they have received as many as 50 on some days.
