Lady Redskins end regular season

With games last Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday nights the Bryan County Lady Redskins end their regular season with 3 wins and 21 losses. The Pierce County Lady Bears trampled the Lady 'Skins 43-36 on Tuesday night, while the Claxton Lady Tigers pounced on the BCHS girls 50-46 Friday. Saturday night, the last game of the regular season, the Lady Redskins came close, but couldn't pull out the win against Metter 45-43.

Wildcats fall at buzzer

Not until Xavier Owens' 3 point desperation shot rang off the rim at the final buzzer did the Richmond Hill Wildcats finally concede on their second potential win of the season. While it was another gut wrenching end, the 43-40 loss to visiting Metter gave the team another reason to walk off with their heads up high.

Press does in Lady 'skins

As the 2006-2007 basketball season nears its close, the prior determination of the Lady Redskins seems to be fizzling out. The frustration is seen on the players' faces and in their actions, such as the technical foul call on Liz Cross Saturday night. With two tough losses this weekend, the BCHS girls saw defeat by Calvary Baptist 57-31 and by Savannah Country Day 60-30, but there were moments when the girls put all of this aside and fought like champions.

Redskins outsized in losses

Outsized and outgunned, the Bryan County Redskins were driven to two losses on Friday and Saturday by two highly ranked Region 3-A teams. Calvary Baptist powered their way to a 78-43 win, while Savannah Country Day beat the Redskins with a solid 76-50 victory.

RH girls thrash metter

The Lady Wildcats are looking strong heading into the upcoming regionals. Although they suffered a 70-31 loss to top-seeded Hepzibah, they came away with victories over Portal and Metter.

Bryan County High School basketball star Liz Cross has a lot to be proud of. Her strong community and school involvement aside, Cross is an undeniable powerhouse on the basketball court. That's why she's the first Bryan County Athlete of the Month for 2007.

RHHS girls upend Saints

After getting beat in their first meeting at St. Vincents in a fairly close but not so inspiring performance, head coach Wade Wright and his Richmond Hill team had to be thinking of the rematch with the Saints that would come at the Wildcat gym this past Friday. They had to be thinking that they are the better team, thinking that this season's future rests on that game.

Hendrix hoopsters hit hardwood

On Jan. 22, the Hendrix Park Youth Recreation Association kicked off their basketball season. Featured was an event in which each team got to play two games each in the 8 and under division.

After big win, Wildcats drop three

After their first win of the season, against Bryan County, Richmond Hill had hopes of beginning on a road to more victories. Head coach Tom Morris had spoke of turning a corner, but that road and corner has proved a bit treacherous on this last leg of the season as the Wildcats fell to highly touted Liberty County 56-26 on Tuesday before being devastated at home Friday, in a game they had thought was win-able, at the hands of Benedictine 55-29.

Limited red snapper season opens

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker recently approved a request by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries to allow limited recreational harvesting of red snapper in federal waters, according to Doug Haymans, policy coordinator with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Wildlife Rescue has busy baby season

In an effort to educate the public about what to do when finding a wild animal that may be injured or orphaned, the Georgia Wildlife Rescue Association (GWRA) has released information about the numbers and types of calls that they have received on their statewide Wildlife Hotline. Barely two months old, the toll-free number has had even more of an impact than expected. Calls average between 25 per day, but the organization reports that they have received as many as 50 on some days.

Savannah man sets GA record for 205lb, 8 ounce swordfish

Brendin Page of Savannah is the newest Georgia saltwater gamefish record holder after landing a 205 pound 8-ounce swordfish while fishing offshore on May 31. Page's fish bested the previous men's record held by W.H. Lippitt since 1980 by almost 20 pounds.
