Area gas dealer facing fraud charges found dead

ST. MARYS - A coastal Georgia businessman facing federal fraud charges has been found dead a month before he was scheduled to stand trial. Capt. Greg Jackson of the Camden County Sheriff's Office said authorities found Fairley Cisco, 67, dead at his St. Marys home Thursday morning after family members called 911.

Authorities bust $3.5M stash

CLAYTON - Rabun County authorities have uncovered a stash of marijuana they say has an estimated worth of $3.5 million. Authorities estimate about 700 plants were seized from a location on North Germany Mountain Road by a team that included the Rabun County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. It follows a two-month investigation.

Savannah names veteran as police chief

SAVANNAH - A 36-year veteran of Savannah's police department has been named the city's first black police chief. Mayor Otis Johnson announced Wednesday that officials have chosen 60-year-old Willie Lovett to lead the Savannah-Chatham County Metropolitan Police Department.

New Middle Georgia marshal has ties to this area

MACON, Ga. (AP) - Sitting in his office on the top floor of the William Augustus Bootle Federal Building in downtown Macon, Middle Georgia's new U.S. marshal says he's come back home. Appointed by President Obama, Willie L. Richardson Jr. has returned to the Middle District of Georgia, where he was first assigned after graduating from recruit training 21 years ago.

Long County High gets new principal

DOT suspends closures for holiday

JESUP - The Georgia Department of Transportation announced Monday that to help travelers during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, construction-related lane closures on all interstate and major state-system highways would be suspended from noon Friday, May 24, to 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 28.

WASHINGTON, May 14, 2013 - Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced today that he has signed a memorandum directing defense managers to prepare to furlough most Defense Department civilian employees for up to 11 days between July 8 and the Sept. 30 end of the fiscal year.
