ST. MARYS - A coastal Georgia businessman facing federal fraud charges has been found dead a month before he was scheduled to stand trial. Capt. Greg Jackson of the Camden County Sheriff's Office said authorities found Fairley Cisco, 67, dead at his St. Marys home Thursday morning after family members called 911.
Authorities bust $3.5M stash
CLAYTON - Rabun County authorities have uncovered a stash of marijuana they say has an estimated worth of $3.5 million. Authorities estimate about 700 plants were seized from a location on North Germany Mountain Road by a team that included the Rabun County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. It follows a two-month investigation.
Barnes leads cash race for governor
ATLANTA (AP) - Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Roy Barnes says he's raised more than $900,000 in the first three months of the year and has a whopping $2.8 million in the bank. That leads the other candidates who've reported so far.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - The National Hurricane Center is considering adding a storm-surge warning to its list of watches and warnings issued during hurricane season. Center officials floated the idea of a storm-surge warning Wednesday to a crowd of emergency managers, first responders and meteorologists attending the 2010 National Hurricane Conference in Orlando.
Savannah names veteran as police chief
SAVANNAH - A 36-year veteran of Savannah's police department has been named the city's first black police chief. Mayor Otis Johnson announced Wednesday that officials have chosen 60-year-old Willie Lovett to lead the Savannah-Chatham County Metropolitan Police Department.
New Middle Georgia marshal has ties to this area
MACON, Ga. (AP) - Sitting in his office on the top floor of the William Augustus Bootle Federal Building in downtown Macon, Middle Georgia's new U.S. marshal says he's come back home. Appointed by President Obama, Willie L. Richardson Jr. has returned to the Middle District of Georgia, where he was first assigned after graduating from recruit training 21 years ago.

ATLANTA - U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., was admitted to Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta on Monday night after doctors found an irregular heartbeat during a routine appointment to check Isakson's progress in recovering from a bacterial infection.
Long County High gets new principal
At its March meeting, the Long County Board of Education named a new high school principal for the 2010-11 school year. The board didn't have to look far. Current assistant principal, Scotty Hattaway, was chosen to replace Dr. Dolores Mallard.

DOT suspends closures for holiday
JESUP - The Georgia Department of Transportation announced Monday that to help travelers during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, construction-related lane closures on all interstate and major state-system highways would be suspended from noon Friday, May 24, to 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 28.
State further restricts groundwater pumping
Effective immediately, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division will prohibit new groundwater withdrawals in the Coastal Georgia counties of Chatham, Bryan, Liberty and the portion of Effingham County south of Highway 119.
Stewart employees preparing for July furloughs
A May 14 Department of Defense news release announced Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel's directive that furloughs will begin for DoD civilians after July 8. Fort Stewart Public Affairs Officer Kevin Larson confirmed that civilian personnel managers at Stewart are preparing for the furloughs but noted that details had to be worked out locally.
Pentagon steps closer to civilian furloughs
WASHINGTON, May 14, 2013 - Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced today that he has signed a memorandum directing defense managers to prepare to furlough most Defense Department civilian employees for up to 11 days between July 8 and the Sept. 30 end of the fiscal year.
