Man convicted in boy's slaying appealing

BRUNSWICK - A Brunswick man sentenced to death last year for sexually abusing and killing a 6-year-old boy says he deserves a new trial because a prosecutor called him an "animal" during the trial. Attorneys for David Edenfield told a Glynn County Superior Court judge Thursday the outburst by District Attorney Stephen Kelley inflamed jurors and unfairly influenced their sentence after his October trial.

Hearing for Troy Davis in second day

SAVANNAH - A Georgia death row inmate is due back in federal court in Savannah for a second day in a rare hearing ordered by the U.S. Supreme Court to give him a shot at proving his innocence. Prosecutors for Georgia's attorney general will have their turn Thursday to present evidence rebutting claims by Troy Anthony Davis that he was wrongly convicted of murder in the 1989 slaying of Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail.

Heat expected to continue

ATLANTA - The hot weather that's moved into Georgia is expected to continue for the next few days, and the National Weather Service says it may get even warmer. The weather service predicts high temperatures ranging from the 90s to about 100 for most of the state with some chance of showers or thundershowers Monday, with not much change on Tuesday. Some areas in the mountains should be a few degrees cooler.

Regional sales tax for road projects now possible

ATLANTA - Gov. Sonny Perdue signed a long-awaited transportation bill on Wednesday that will allow Georgia voters to decide whether to hike the sales tax to pay for roads and infrastructure. The legislation, three years in the making, divides Georgia into 12 regions and will ask voters during the 2012 presidential primary whether to hike the sales tax by 1 cent to pay for roads, bridges and rail projects in that part of the state. ...

Terrell County sheriff sentenced to jail

ALBANY - Terrell County Sheriff John Bowens will spend five days in jail and pay a fine after a judge determined he ignored an order to bring inmates to court. Judge Dane Perkins says Bowens intentionally created a lack of personnel on a day inmates were due in court. Perkins says Bowens then claimed he didn't have enough workers to transport inmates safely. The Sheriff's office has 32 employees.

Governor to sign seabelts in pickups law

Little threat here from oil spill

Scientists say it will be at least two weeks before any surface oil from the disastrous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is carried northward by a loop current to merge into the Gulf Stream off the coast of Georgia. Because the continental shelf stretches 75 miles off Georgia's shore, it is unlikely any oil will show up on area beaches or be washed into the state's fragile coastal marshes, according to experts at the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography.

Haiti worries storm experts more than oil spill

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - A hurricane might help break up the oil spill staining the Gulf of Mexico, but the oil won't change significantly how tropical storms develop or the damage they inflict, the director of the National Hurricane Center said Wednesday.
