BRUNSWICK - Two bidders will compete to become the new owners of Sea Island Co. when the Georgia resort operator is sold at auction next week, two months after it filed for bankruptcy protection.

Nicole causes problems farther up coast
WILMINGTON, N.C. - A massive rainstorm drenched the East Coast from the Carolinas to Maine on Thursday, washing out commutes and wiping away months of dry weather. The storm was driven by what was left of Tropical Storm Nicole, which cropped up quickly just south of Cuba and headed nearly straight north, but fizzled out over the Florida Straits. It caused about two days of drizzle in Coastal Georgia, but no heavy rain.
Kingston, Perdue promote deepening river to port
Gov. Sonny Perdue and Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., made brief appearances Monday afternoon at a joint news conference in Savannah to discuss financial investments and plans for deepening the Port of Savannah and its connection to the Panama Canal Expansion.
President Carter sickened on plane
CLEVELAND - Former President Jimmy Carter, on a trip promoting his new book, developed an upset stomach on a flight to Cleveland on Tuesday and was staying at a hospital overnight at his doctor's recommendation.
Storm could bring rain, little else
A tropical depression that formed quickly today over the Northwester Caribbean Sea could be close to the Georgia Coast by Thursday morning, but officials expect little danger from it.
Jimmy Carter hospitalized
CLEVELAND - The Carter Center says Jimmy Carter developed an upset stomach on a flight to Cleveland and was taken to a hospital for observation. Jackie Mayo, a spokeswoman at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, says the 85-year-old former president was a passenger on a Delta flight to Cleveland late Tuesday morning and became ill. She says he was taken off a plane by rescue crews.
Casting scheduled for Savannah film
SAVANNAH - Officials in Savannah say a film adaptation of the novel "And Yet You Still Chose Me" will be shot in the city next year, with casting set for Oct. 2 and 3 at the Savannah Mall.
Execution delayed after suicide attempt
ATLANTA - The Georgia Supreme Court delayed the execution Tuesday of a man convicted of three 1998 slayings who attempted suicide hours before he was to be put to death.

Stewart employees preparing for July furloughs
A May 14 Department of Defense news release announced Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel's directive that furloughs will begin for DoD civilians after July 8. Fort Stewart Public Affairs Officer Kevin Larson confirmed that civilian personnel managers at Stewart are preparing for the furloughs but noted that details had to be worked out locally.
Pentagon steps closer to civilian furloughs
WASHINGTON, May 14, 2013 - Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced today that he has signed a memorandum directing defense managers to prepare to furlough most Defense Department civilian employees for up to 11 days between July 8 and the Sept. 30 end of the fiscal year.
