DOT seeks funding for high-speed rail
ATLANTA - Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Vance C. Smith Jr. announced Monday that the department applied for $34 million in federal funding to accelerate development of high-speed rail service from Atlanta to Chattanooga, Tenn., continuing to Nashville and eventually to Louisville, Ky.

FBI dragnet seeks 'Granddad Bandit'
RICHMOND, Va. - Photos of a balding, stocky man believed to have robbed 25 banks in 13 states will be plastered on billboards around the country as authorities try to catch the "Granddad Bandit," the FBI announced Monday. ATLANTA - Extremely hot and humid weather will continue across Georgia. Forecasters at the National Weather Service have issued a heat advisory Tuesday for Southeast Georgia from 11 a.m. until 8 this evening. Missing man's death ruled homocide
SPRINGFIELD - An Effingham County man's death has been ruled a homicide months after his skeletal remains turned up in a field. Effingham sheriff's spokesman David Ehsanipoor says Georgia Bureau of Investigation autopsy results show Robert Mack died from unspecified trauma.
Officer fired after molestation charges
RINCON - A 34-year-old Chatham County corrections officer has been fired after he was charged with child molestation Monday. Rincon police arrested James Jackson Brown at a local home. Rincon police Chief Mike Bohannon says the arrest followed an ongoing investigation.
More state budget cuts being reported
ATLANTA - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution says Gov. Sonny Perdue is ordering more budget cuts by state agencies because some federal stimulus money appropriations are stalled in Congress. The governor's office told the newspaper the 4 percent cuts would reduce state spending by about $25 million a month.
Lab backlog slowing Brunswick beating case
BRUNSWICK - A prosecutor says a backlog at the state crime lab is slowing analysis of evidence collected in the beating deaths of eight people last year at a mobile home in Brunswick. Acting District Attorney David Perry told a judge Thursday that blood, DNA and fiber evidence and surveillance video tapes remain to be analyzed before being turned over to attorneys for Guy Heinze Jr., who is charged with killing his father and seven others.

DOT suspends closures for holiday
JESUP - The Georgia Department of Transportation announced Monday that to help travelers during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, construction-related lane closures on all interstate and major state-system highways would be suspended from noon Friday, May 24, to 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 28.
State further restricts groundwater pumping
Effective immediately, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division will prohibit new groundwater withdrawals in the Coastal Georgia counties of Chatham, Bryan, Liberty and the portion of Effingham County south of Highway 119.
Stewart employees preparing for July furloughs
A May 14 Department of Defense news release announced Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel's directive that furloughs will begin for DoD civilians after July 8. Fort Stewart Public Affairs Officer Kevin Larson confirmed that civilian personnel managers at Stewart are preparing for the furloughs but noted that details had to be worked out locally.
Pentagon steps closer to civilian furloughs
WASHINGTON, May 14, 2013 - Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced today that he has signed a memorandum directing defense managers to prepare to furlough most Defense Department civilian employees for up to 11 days between July 8 and the Sept. 30 end of the fiscal year.
