Savannah Tech enrollment up 18%

SAVANNAH - Official enrollment numbers at Savannah Technical College for the 2010 winter quarter show an increase of 18.8 percent in total credit enrollment from the same quarter last year, marking the second consecutive quarter that enrollment has topped 5,000 and the largest-ever enrollment for winter quarter.

Bryant named district STAR student

Shannon Bryant of Richmond Hill High School was named the 2010 PAGE STAR student for the Bryan County School district. The announcement was made last week by Michael Bush of the Richmond Hill Lions Club, who have been long-time sponsors of the local STAR student program.

Fire Safety Week at RHES

The second grade at Richmond Hill Elementary School was visited on Oct. 23 by the Richmond Hill Fire Department as part of Fire Safety Week. An assembly was held in which fire safety rules were discussed and students were able to view a fire truck. Some also got to see firefighters up close. Among them were Kenecia Chukwudi, Sydney Fortson and Jalen Rouse from Mrs. Grant-Barr's class, shown with Firefighter Dave Williams in full bunker gear. Fourth graders tour Fort King George

Almost 400 fourth-graders from George Washington Carver Elementary School ventured back in time last Friday when they went to Fort King George in Darien on a field trip. Organized by Marcy Newberry, students heard presentations on cannon firing, the Guale Indians, weaving cloth and early medical techniques. Many of the students are studying Colonial history, and the trip reinforced what they learned in the classroom.

Heads shaved for a good cause

Richmond Hill High School Assistant Principals Mickey Bayens and Bivens Miller got their heads shaved Friday at Wildcats Stadium after the school raised more than $10,000 to give to United Way of the Coastal Empire. The money was raised by faculty, staff and students. Bayens said the two promised to have it done if the goal was reached. Lou Gambill and Sherry Vick did the honors while students cheered. "It's about giving back," Bayens said.

BCE student take 4-H honors

Three fifth-graders from Bryan County Elementary entered 4-H projects and won ribbons at the recent Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair in Statesboro. Aleia Hilliard entered her project titled "What Do you Do with Decimals?" and claimed second place. Catalina Temple's project, "Upcycling Fashion," also won second place. Gracie Edwards earned first place for her project, "Saving Coral Reefs."

Graduation rate increases at BCS

The four-year graduation rate for Bryan County Schools high schools improved to 80.9 percent in 2014, according to data released by the Georgia Department of Education.
