Student honored at ABAC
Ezekiel B. Gaines of Richmond Hill has been named as one of 207 students who were selected for the Distinguished Achievement List for the 2010 summer term at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College by Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs Niles Reddick.
College students head back to class
College students, from freshmen to graduate students, are gearing up for the start of a new school year. The colleges at the Army Education Center began the fall semester Monday. Classes start at Armstrong Atlantic State University's Liberty Center on Aug. 16. And many recent high school graduates are packing up and preparing to move away from home to attend classes.

Early start gives kids more holidays
In Bryan County it's been a tradition of sorts to begin school on Friday. That changed this year with a Wednesday start. Why? There were a handful of reasons, according to school Superintendent John Oliver, which ranged from scheduling around potential furlough days to paying respect to the military with a four-day Veterans Day weekend in November. Open houses lead to class start today
The school year officially began today, but Bryan County Schools got off to a busy start on Monday and Tuedsay with open houses at each of the county's nine schools.
State finalist in second round fo federal grants
Georgia has been named one of 19 finalists for the second round of federal Race to the Top grants. If the state is named a recipient, it could be awarded up to $400 million over four years to implement the plan it submitted. Delaware and Tennessee were the final recipients of round one funding, in which 40 states and Washington, D.C., submitted applications. Georgia finished third.
Pembroke library honors young reader
Friends of the Pembroke Library picked for their third reader of the week, 3-year-old, Seeda Perry. She is the daughter of Heather Perry, who is stationed in Iraq. Seeda lives with her grandfather, William Satterfield. She loves books about Winnie the Pooh and playing outside in her sandbox. Her best friends are Helen and Cecil and, of course, Roscoe her boxer.

Post schools to lose five days to furloughs
ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 22, 2013 - Students, teachers and parents of the Defense Department's schools can be confident that despite the department's upcoming civilian furloughs, the school year will start on time, the Department of Defense Education Activity's director said today.
Carver chorus students perform
G.W. Carver Elementary School students perform recently during a recital at the school. The chorus performed for fourth- and fifth-graders and sang pieces from "The Star-Spangled Banner," "Green Eggs and Ham" and "Dynamite."
