Bryan County High School recently had a yellow poplar tree planted near the school gym in celebration of Arbor Day. The tree was provided by Shawn Diddie of the Georgia Forestry Commission.
In celebration of Georgia Arbor Day, Fred Warnell and Clayton Tillman planted a bald cypress tree Tuesday at G.W. Carver Elementary School. Warnell and Tillma are Bryan County district supervisors with the Coastal Soil and Water Conservation District. Warnell also is a registered forester. Amy Bell, soil-conservation technician with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, assisted with materials from NRCS. Angie Smith's fifth-grade class is studying plants, and planting the tree reinforced studied concepts for students.

The University System of Georgia's Board of Regents voted Tuesday to allow Armstrong Atlantic State University to shorten its name to Armstrong State University. The name modification will take affect at the beginning of the new fiscal year, which starts July 1. Armstrong is building a new 21,000-square-foot Armstrong Liberty Center on Memorial Drive in Hinesville. The new campus is scheduled to open in summer 2015.

Richmond Hill Elementary School second-graders in Julie Alderman's class recently took a field trip to the UGA Mary Kahrs Warnell Forest Education Center in Guyton. The students toured the facility, hiked trails and also got up close and personal with some native snakes during a presentation.
