Parents, if you want your child to be more successful in school, become even more involved in their schooling. You can make a real difference for the good of your child. "When parents are involved in their children's educations at home, they do better in school. And when parents are involved in school, children go farther in school - and the schools they go to are better" (National Education Association, 2006).
I frequently have the opportunity to travel around the state into different school districts and their high schools and I often receive comments from those principals praising the exemplary status of the Bryan County Schools.
Good news abounded at the recent Board of Education meeting, where awards were distributed to a couple hundred students in the district on Thursday, Dec. 20.
After debate from the Board of Education and district parents, the 2008-2009 school calendar will look like its predecessor.
I spoke with Charles Blakewood about his opinion on the currently dwindling Hope Scholarship that Georgia offers. Mr. Blakewood teaches both Speech and English as RHHS. The Wildcat band played a Christmas themed concert in J.F. Gregory Park last Tuesday. One of Richmond Hill's own, Heather Vaccaro recently signed with Milligan College. During her years here at RHHS, Heather has proven herself to be a superb softball player. I consulted with Heather about Milligan itself, and how she rose to such a distinguished achievement. It is encouraging to see a skilled athlete from Richmond Hill on their way to compete at the collegiate level.
As parents we want the best for our children. We want the best opportunities, best schools, and best teachers.
RHHS prides itself in taking an interest in its community, and with events like the annual Ornament Sale it's easy to see that the student body truly cares.
This week I met with Wes Valentine. Mr. Valentine has a long history of teaching art in Richmond Hill. He previously taught at Carver Elementary, and is enjoying his first year teaching at the high school. It became quickly apparent to me while interviewing Mr. Valentine that he has unquestionable passion for both art and teaching.
