What's in future for Fort Gordon

FORT GORDON - Take a drive around the periphery of Fort Gordon and you'd be excused for thinking you have entered small-town America.

Along the edge of the post, multicolored playgrounds intermingle with new two-story homes - the yards perfectly manicured. Pearl white sidewalks line the road for school-age children to walk the short distance to a K-8 school. They dangle from monkey bars as their mothers watch from benches nearby.

3rd ID soldier killed in crash in Iraq

FORT STEWART - The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Pvt. Francisco J. Guardado-Ramirez, 21, of Sunland Park, N.M.., died June 2 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident when the MRAP he was in struck an overpass. An investigation is underway. He was assigned to 1-41 Field Artillery, 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd ID.

Hunter soldier killed in Afghanistan

MARIETTA - A soldier from Marietta has died in Afghanistan.

Department of Defense officials Wednesday announced 22-year-old Spc. Jonathan K. Peney died June 1 in Kandahar province. Officials say he died of wounds sustained when he was shot by enemy forces.

Congress voting on gays in military

WASHINGTON - Congress is headed toward landmark votes on whether to allow gays to serve openly in the military.

The House was expected to vote as early as Thursday on a proposal by Rep. Patrick Murphy, a Pennsylvania Democrat who served in the Iraq war, that would repeal the 1993 law known as "don't ask, don't tell."

Soldier proves his mettle

Fort Stewart soldier Cpl. Ryan Shurtleff brought home one silver and a bronze medal from the inaugural Warrior Games held May 10-14 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Shurtleff was wounded by an IED in Iraq and is assigned to the Warrior Transition Battalion here.

Texas man fakes his way to NCO post

FORT WORTH, Texas - A Texas man with no military experience managed to trick the Army into letting him enter a reserve unit as a noncommissioned officer earlier this year, putting an untrained soldier in a leadership position in a time of war, an Associated Press investigation has found.

The revelation comes just months after the Army drew criticism for failing to flag the suspicious activities of the Army psychiatrist now charged with killing 13 and wounding dozens of others at Fort Hood.

DoD: recalled helmets no 'direct threat' to soliders

WASHINGTON, May 17, 2010 - The Army recall of 44,000 Advanced Combat Helmets that were issued to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan is the result of a Department of Justice investigation as well as independent tests that show the helmets do not meet Army standards, military officials said today.

Army officials say the recalled helmets are not a "direct risk" to soldiers.
