Soldier proves his mettle

Fort Stewart soldier Cpl. Ryan Shurtleff brought home one silver and a bronze medal from the inaugural Warrior Games held May 10-14 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Shurtleff was wounded by an IED in Iraq and is assigned to the Warrior Transition Battalion here.

Texas man fakes his way to NCO post

FORT WORTH, Texas - A Texas man with no military experience managed to trick the Army into letting him enter a reserve unit as a noncommissioned officer earlier this year, putting an untrained soldier in a leadership position in a time of war, an Associated Press investigation has found.

The revelation comes just months after the Army drew criticism for failing to flag the suspicious activities of the Army psychiatrist now charged with killing 13 and wounding dozens of others at Fort Hood.

DoD: recalled helmets no 'direct threat' to soliders

WASHINGTON, May 17, 2010 - The Army recall of 44,000 Advanced Combat Helmets that were issued to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan is the result of a Department of Justice investigation as well as independent tests that show the helmets do not meet Army standards, military officials said today.

Army officials say the recalled helmets are not a "direct risk" to soldiers.

Stewart soldier's death under review

Staff Sgt. Esau S.A. Gonzales died May 3 in Mosul, Iraq, from a gunshot wound to the chest. Army officials confirmed Monday this was a non-combat related injury. The sergeant's death remains under investigation.

DoD starts pay, perks study

WASHINGTON, May 11, 2010 - Defense Department officials today announced the start of the congressionally mandated 11th Quadrennial Review of Military Compensation.

The review's focus, officials said, will be on combat pay, compensation for reserve-component servicemembers, caregivers and survivors and pay incentives for critical career fields.

Benning ranger killed in Afghanistan

FORT BENNING - The Army says a member of a Fort Benning Ranger unit was killed by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan.

The military says in a release that 27-year-old Capt. Kyle A. Comfort of Jacksonville, Ala., died Saturday in Helmand province of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit.
