Soldier up for USO volunteer of year

Fort Stewart soldier Spc. Raymond Castle is an easy-going kind of guy, always ready to lift the spirits of fellow soldiers, even in a war zone, according to Georgia USO President Mary Lou Austin. Castle logged more than 440 USO volunteer hours by leading card games, video-game competitions and sporting events while deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, Austin said. He even donned a Statue of Liberty costume for the July 4 holiday.

Soldier killed in chopper crash on Hunter

A 3rd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment MH-60M Blackhawk sustained a hard landing at 11:24 a.m. Thursday while conducting routine training on Hunter Army Airfield. One soldier was killed, and two others were injured. The injured have been taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield's Winn Army Community Hospital opened its new Liberty wing Tuesday morning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Due to rain, the ceremony was held indoors near the front doorway of the new 65,000-square-foot facility.
