You can't do it by yourself

Many of us remember the TV commercial about the elderly woman who was alone, fell in her home and "couldn't get up." She found herself in a bad situation. We all remember the woman's cry for help: "Help, I've fallen and I can't get up."

These old paths are worth following

Greater love has no one than this

Jesus said, "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." During this Memorial Day weekend, we take the time to remember those who have given their lives for us. I know that we, as a nation, have often debated the merits of a particular war. The reasons for conflict have been many and varied.

A reward to look forward to

A few weeks ago I started walking/running in the mornings, mainly for health reasons. It has been hard to be consistent so I only do this activity a few days a week.

Always remember God cares

The Apostle Paul wrote, "Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God" (2 Cor. 1:2 – 4). In a world where trouble waits around every corner it is good to know that Christians do not have to face trouble alone, we ...

Keep God fresh in your heart

Writing a column like this can be a challenge. After all, I also preach and teach two or three times every week. I don't want to use the same material over and over. I want to say something fresh and relevant. Still, the Christian message really hasn't changed in the last 2000 years. It is still about what Jesus did for us when He gave His life so that we might live.

Reacting to non-believers

Recently in a youth meeting we were discussing prayer requests when one of the teens started talking about a new student at his school. The student got into a discussion about religion and let him and his friends, who are professed Christians, know that they didn't want anything to do with God and would rather serve Satan.

Church enjoys grand anniversary

Members of Baconton Missionary Baptist Church of Walthourville are celebrating 141 years of service. For most of its existence, the church was in Allenhurst. However, the city of Walthourville recently incorporated the land the church sits on.

On behalf of the United Ministerial Alliance of Liberty County, I congratulate everyone who is graduating this season. We know it's not easy to complete such a great task, but through it all you did it.

Try to be ready

I just received news that my favorite uncle is close to passing away. He had cancer a few years ago that went into remission but recently it returned. The good news is that he has trusted Christ for forgiveness and has assurance of where he will end up after death.

See yourself in the light of His word

The older one gets and the more one tries to do, the more the years seem to fly by. From time to time we need to reflect on what is going on in our lives. Most will do this about school, jobs, finances, etc., and it is good to do those things. But let us not forget to look at our spiritual well being.

Be generous with your gift to God

One of the funniest lines I've ever read was in a newspaper in Las Vegas, Nevada, the day after the Southern Baptist Convention met there in the late 1980's. I know, who would have thought that Southern Baptists, of all people, would meet in Las Vegas. But we did, and evidently made an impression on a number of people. The writer simply stated, "Ten thousand Southern Baptists descended on Las Vegas earlier this week with a twenty dollar bill in one hand, and a copy of the Ten Commandments in the other. They didn't break either one ...

Remember the importance of family

I remember being in church a number of years ago when my pastor was making closing announcements. The week had been designated "Home and Family Week," and family had been the sermon topic for the day.

Actions speak louder than words

The other day, I was watching the news when a political ad featuring the politician came across my TV screen. He told what he believed and what he would do if elected. Immediately, I thought, "I wonder if his past voting record in politics mirrored what he was saying."

Everyone can be adopted in God's family

The world is full of people wanting to know, "What is in it for me?" This attitude keeps many from ever checking out God's word and obeying the Gospel. They see no benefit coming their way, so why bother with religion?

We should look back to go forward

I was moved recently after reading an article titled "Down Blige Road" in Richmond Hill Reflections magazine. As "transplanted" African-Americans here in Richmond Hill, it helped us understand and get more insight into the pasts of other African-Americans who lived in, worked in and built this community.

Don't wait until 'someday' to follow God

Life is but for a little while. James wrote, "Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away" (James 4:14). What a great reminder of life's brevity, as it can be seen many times during a year.

Gardening teaches to lean on God

As I usually do, earlier this year I planted a little vegetable garden. It's not too elaborate, but it gives me something to enjoy and provides us with a variety of wonderfully fresh things to eat.

Our past life is behind us, thanks to God

A couple of months ago, I went to have surgery. In that process, I had to look at my medical records to make sure they were correct, including medicines I had taken and previous surgeries.
