For sale: A lying mirror

Nobody enjoys privacy more than Yours Truly. I confess I am not a very happy camper when that privacy is compromised in any fashion. Recently, I endured a tremendous trespass on my privacy.

Seek comfort from God, part 2

Job stands out as one who, in the face of trials, remained faithful to God. He lost most of his possessions, all his children were killed, his so-called friends tormented them with their ideas of what his problem was, even his wife told him to curse God and die.

He is not silent; we are not listening

Yesterday was my wife's birthday. I'm not the smartest guy in the world, but I do know a few things. I most certainly will not reveal to you her age. And at some point over this weekend I will either take her to dinner, or will cook myself, and I will also give a small gift of some kind. In other words, we will celebrate, but there won't be large amounts of fanfare.

John 3:16

The other day I just happened to glance across my desk in my office and spotted a new devotional book I received in the mail. It was titled "John 3:16" and was written by the popular author, Max Lucado.

We must never be satisfied with who we are

There is a tension in every life, and it is only exaggerated if you are a Christian. That tension has to do with satisfaction in life. God calls us to be "content" or satisfied with our circumstance in life. And yet He never wants us to be satisfied to be who we are right now. There is the constant call to grow, to become more, to be His disciple.

Make the most of every opportunity you get

In the book of Ephesians, chapter 5 and verse 16, it which tells us to "make the most of every opportunity." When we think of this verse we usually apply it to sharing of our faith, which is a valid application. However I think it goes far beyond this application.

Seek comfort

From the beginning God has cared for us. Even in creation He prepared the world so that man could survive and thrive.

He is faithful

I started playing baseball when I was 6 years old. Actually I played with my dad even before that, but when I was 6 I had the privilege of playing in the first T-ball league in the Atlanta area. What fun it was. I played baseball all the way through high school, and played softball for many years after that.

Things we can and can't do about 2007

Believe it or not, 2007 is over and we need to start remembering to write 2008 on all our important things that require a date.

You can try, but you cannot ignore God

One of the sayings of the day is, "Just get away from it all." Normally some vacation spot is trying to entice us to come and pay them a visit. On occasion it is good to get away, but sadly some try to get away from God.

Developing proper spiritual growth, part 1

Perhaps one of the most disturbing things we can observe is something, and in particular someone, who has failed to develop.

Only what’s done for Christ will last

After Christmas, I was burning boxes that some of the presents were wrapped in. Those boxes were reduced to ashes not recognizable at all.

God allows you to start anew

Christmas is past, and now we look forward to the new year. I have to admit that I have been described as a "stick in the mud" when it comes to the celebration of New Year's Day. That is especially true in light of my view of Christmas.

See more than a baby in a manger

This time of year we celebrate the birth of Christ, but who is this one that was born in a manger over 2000 years ago? The Bible says that this child is the Son of God; for the Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary bringing about the conception. This is a great mystery but Christ was both God and man. While he was on this earth He was an example to those who watched His life and is our example as we read about that life. He also was a great teacher, instructing people how to live a life pleasing to God ...

Why do we collect angels?

When I was a little boy I collected baseball cards. I had a few football and basketball cards, but the ones that mattered most to me were the baseball players. Like so many other boys my age, I dreamed of one day becoming a professional baseball player.

Actions speak louder than words

The other day, I was watching the news when a political ad featuring the politician came across my TV screen. He told what he believed and what he would do if elected. Immediately, I thought, "I wonder if his past voting record in politics mirrored what he was saying."

Everyone can be adopted in God's family

The world is full of people wanting to know, "What is in it for me?" This attitude keeps many from ever checking out God's word and obeying the Gospel. They see no benefit coming their way, so why bother with religion?

What do we really need to fear?

Recently, there has been quite a bit of fear concerning the confirmed Ebola case on U.S. soil.

We should look back to go forward

I was moved recently after reading an article titled "Down Blige Road" in Richmond Hill Reflections magazine. As "transplanted" African-Americans here in Richmond Hill, it helped us understand and get more insight into the pasts of other African-Americans who lived in, worked in and built this community.

Don't wait until 'someday' to follow God

Life is but for a little while. James wrote, "Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away" (James 4:14). What a great reminder of life's brevity, as it can be seen many times during a year.

Gardening teaches to lean on God

As I usually do, earlier this year I planted a little vegetable garden. It's not too elaborate, but it gives me something to enjoy and provides us with a variety of wonderfully fresh things to eat.

Which way will you go with eternity on line?

Perhaps one of the greatest questions asked by a Bible character was the one asked by Elijah the prophet.

Our past life is behind us, thanks to God

A couple of months ago, I went to have surgery. In that process, I had to look at my medical records to make sure they were correct, including medicines I had taken and previous surgeries.
