Understanding the true meaning of joy

When we think of the Christmas season and the birth of Christ, we think of joy. One of the all-time favorite Christmas hymns is "Joy to the World." For a Scriptural foundation, we need to go to Matthew 2:10, where the Magi were full of joy because they saw the star that led them to the Christ child. Why were they full of joy? Because a future ruler who would reign as a fair, just ...

Make your journey with Jesus every day

It is at this time of year that the world seems to think more about Jesus, and for a month people act and treat others better than at any other time of the year. What about the other months of the year? It is as if they journey through life without Jesus.

At least we can offer praise to God

All throughout Scripture we find instances of people who believed and trusted in God praising him.

Know the Lord in a special way

What is your favorite Christmas song? Which one is your least favorite? The many songs of Christmas are memorable in their own way. I enjoy most of them. I admit that the song "Christmas Shoes" does not make my favorites list. I turn it off as soon as I hear the introduction. You see, it came out the year my mother died. I simply cannot listen to that song.

The Lord wants our spiritual sides healthy

Last week, we began looking at the idea that we must take care of ourselves physically and spiritually. We continue our study today.

Focus on the priority of Christmas

Whether we are ready for it or not, the Christmas season is upon us. There is something horribly wrong with that statement because Christmas should be a joy and a much-anticipated event. We somehow have been sucked into the commercialistic and materialistic side of Christmas to the point that, for some, it is dreaded and fills them with stress and financial burdens. In the book of Luke's telling of the first Christmas, we are told ...

Christmas should be a time of faith

By this evening, the Christmas tree in Pembroke will have been lit. Most of you already have put up your trees and other decorations in your homes. The Christmas season is in full swing, and I, for one, am excited about it.

We must make sure our spiritual sides are healthy

With our physical bodies, we realize they need care. When we become dirty, we wash. If we are injured or sick, we seek medical attention to take care of the problem. We see this as a must that we stay physically healthy, but are we taking care of ourselves spiritually?

Holidays give opportunities for help

Whether we realize it or not, there are needs all around us. There are people who find themselves at the mercy of others in getting their needs met. Some need little assistance while other's issues are more complicated and may need more long-term help.

Thanks should be given for all things from God

Thank you. Those are some of the most meaningful words you can ever say. Have you ever gone out of your way to do something for someone only for them to walk away without a single word? Perhaps you have thought to yourself, "He didn't even say thank you." I know that we are not supposed to do something for another in order to be recognized. But it sure does feel better when they say ...

Sin spoiled paradise, but God offers a pardon

When man was created and placed in the Garden of Eden, God's beautiful plan of creation was complete. Man giving in to Satan turned this beautiful scene into a wicked, ugly one.

Where you go matters with the Lord

I was at a doctor's office the other day and looked up and saw a sign on the wall that got my attention. It read, "When it's a matter of life or death, it matters where you go."

Make a difference with a helping hand

My wife teaches in Richmond Hill. I serve a church in North Bryan County, and we live there. Recently, someone who knows my wife made the connection between the two of us. She told my wife that she reads my column every week, and she enjoys it. I have to tell you, I was encouraged. The fact is that I have no idea who, if anyone, reads what I write. It made my day to know that someone cares.

God's strategy and Satan's tactics

While reading a book on business, I came across an interesting idea: A business owner should have a strategic view and not a tactical view of his or her business.

God invites you to trust Him

I believe that God is absolutely sovereign. That means that he is in control of all things, and that nothing is outside of his authority. He is the one and only God. He knows all things. He is all-powerful.

Mothers are joys and privileges

Eight years ago this April, my mother passed away. It has been a while since that thought has caused me to burst out in tears, but it still fills me with deep sadness. I miss her terribly. I would give just about anything to be able to hear her deep Southern drawl on the telephone again.

Heed wise words of the Master

Jesus said, "He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him; the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day" (John 12:48). Knowing how much depends on obeying his word, a study of the Bible should be important to everyone.
