Seek the Lord's kingdom in life

If you read my column regularly, you realize that I enjoy basketball a great deal. I have played, coached, refereed and watched since I was about 6 years old. When you speak of basketball coaches, no matter the level, one name stands above all of the rest: John Wooden.

Don't talk yourself out of going to church

I hear it all the time: "I am spiritual. I just don't go to church." Or, "I believe in God. I just can't handle how church people act." They are some of the most common explanations people offer to me when I ask them about their spiritual lives. Another version of this is: "Why do I need to go to church? God loves me as I am. I can worship Him (Actually, they seldom use that phrase.) and I can experience Him anywhere."

Make the most important decision of your life

There was a time when I could eat anything, at any time and lots of it, without any repercussions at all. In high school, I probably consumed 3,000 or more calories a day during basketball season.

When caring means more

Recently, my wife and I went out to eat at a restaurant in the Savannah area. After being seated, the waitress said to us, "Today, I am going to be taking care of you."

God has the answers for you

Man, it seems, has always been looking for answers since the beginning of time. Some have sailed the oceans to search for new lands just to get an answer to the question, "What is out there?" Others have searched the world over to find the answer to the questions of life.

Losing is -- and is not -- everthing

Like many of you, I have a favorite professional football team, and then I have teams that are my next favorites and then those I enjoy seeing lose.

Thoughts, behavior can be conquered

Have you ever asked yourself, "Who would I like to become?" What people or events in life have hindered your reaching that goal? To achieve something, you have to remove all distractions that are blocking you from making progress. Fear stops most people from getting what they want - fear of failure, fear of success, fear of rejection, of the unknown, of disappointment. Then, of course, the "what if" fears always fuel these hindrances.

Not knowing what's ahead

Listen to right one for eternal life

Many still believe the lie of Satan today; they fail to see that sin separates man from God (Isaiah 59:1-2). They fail to understand that when they give in to their desires to do wrong things, they - not God - are causing the problem.

One more time around the moutain

At the beginning of a new year, many resolutions are made. If someone could find a way to fine or charge people for broken resolutions, they would quickly become very wealthy.

Don't have a disappointing destination

Sunday afternoon, I was watching a football game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers. I'm not a fan of either team; the only reason I was watching it was that it was the playoffs.

Plow-burning faith can change the world

"So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with 12 yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him. Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. 'Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,' he said, 'and then I will come with you.' 'Go back,' Elijah replied. 'What have I done to you?' So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and ...
