How's your heart, part 2

E. A. Hoffman wrote a song entitled, "Is Thy Heart Right with God?" in which he asked several pointed questions concerning the individual's relationship with God. Mr. Hoffman asked, "Hast thou dominion o'er self and o'er sin? We either control sin or sin controls us. Some would try and ride the fence, but it simply cannot be done. We must choose God or Satan. "No man can serve two masters: for either he ...

How's your heart, part 1

The medical field had risen to the task of trying to inform us all that we need to take care of our hearts. February was heart month. This year one of the main points brought out by the American Heart Association has been the fact that heart disease is a real and present danger to women. This fact surprises many, but the static's tell us it is a fact.

We need to use the tools we get from God

Just like tools we use in all other aspects of life, the Bible is a tool. A carpenter needs a hammer, a cook needs pans, a painter needs brushes, and a Christian needs a Bible.

Children of God

It is amazing, both in the Old Testament as well as the New, how many times followers of God are referred to as "Children of God." The Apostle Paul even calls new Christians "babes" or "infants."

How to walk with God (part 2)

Last week we started looking at the topic, "how to walk with God," we now continue those thoughts. God does not ask us to do the things He asked the Patriarchs to do, nor the things that were required of those under the Law of Moses. We are told to do the things that are right or necessary for us to be saved. All three time periods mesh together (Gal. 3:16 – 29).

Rain and spirituality

In the last month or so we have received quite a bit of rainfall; raining almost every day this week alone. Not long ago it was reported that we were several inches below normal for the year and believe it or not some local areas still are a little behind. (Definitely not my area.) As I listen to others talk, it seems that they understand that we need rain but they only want it when it will be convenient to their schedule.

'I want all to go'

Last year was the first year that all my family did not get to go home for the holidays. Oh I knew one day it would happen with everyone growing up and getting jobs, but still it just did not seem right to know that all my family would not be with me. In fact it made me sad.

Some good advice

One of the things I remember my father always saying to me was "unloaded guns kill a lot of people." I used to argue with him telling him that it is impossible for an unloaded gun to kill anyone since it was unloaded. He would respond with, "you know what I mean," and I did. For what he was really saying is that guns, which were supposedly empty, killed people because when they ...

God invites you to trust Him

Mothers are joys and privileges

Eight years ago this April, my mother passed away. It has been a while since that thought has caused me to burst out in tears, but it still fills me with deep sadness. I miss her terribly. I would give just about anything to be able to hear her deep Southern drawl on the telephone again.

Heed wise words of the Master

Jesus said, "He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him; the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day" (John 12:48). Knowing how much depends on obeying his word, a study of the Bible should be important to everyone.
