Lent is a time of prayer, fasting

This week marks the beginning of the Lenten period. Lent is a 40-day span before Easter that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday, which is the day before Easter. The six Sundays during this period are not counted because Sundays commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ and are thought of as "mini Easters."

The god who answers by fire -- He is God!

Elijah said to them, "I am the only one of the Lord's prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets. Get two bulls for us. Let Baal's prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The god who answers by fire - he is ...

Be patient with those who haven't grown up

Q: Our 19-year-old daughter is dating a 19-year-old boy, who, in general, we like. He's not a partier, he doesn't smoke or drink, he's serious about his education and he has a rational career plan mapped out. Our daughter also is a responsible, level-headed girl. The problem is that the boyfriend's response to almost anything my daughter says is a cut or put-down, a dismissal of her accomplishment or mocking. She says his father does the same thing to him, his brother and their mother; so to him, it's "normal." Our daughter is an upbeat ...

Changing a region one soul at a time

"They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him. This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones. When he ...

Come to life with Jesus Christ

Spring is my favorite time of the year for a couple of reasons; first, because the weather gets warmer but also because it is a time of new life.

Living life to higher standards

Last week I talked a little about Coach John Wooden, the legendary basketball coach at UCLA from the 1950s through the 1970s. The reason I had Coach on my mind was that I was reading a book about him and the seven principles by which he lived his life.

It's a new year and a time for new goals, programs and relationships. Since October 2007, Pastor David Daus, an Indiana native, has served as pastor of Gumbranch Baptist Church. He said he is excited about the things happening at the church and the far-reaching impact members have on their community.

God wants us to be real

Writing this column is always a joy for me. I consider it a privilege to share the gospel with others, and I do not take it lightly when people take the time to listen to what I have to say. As a result, I am thrilled when I receive feedback regarding something I have written or shared. It lets me know that people understand what I am saying and that it has touched their life in some way.

Toddlers don't always need nap time

Q: Over the holidays, our 28-month-old daughter stopped napping. A couple of days we were so busy with Christmas that a nap simply was not possible. Now, we put her in her crib for her to nap, and she spends about one and a half to two hours in there, wide awake, playing and talking to herself, and then we take her out. I know we cannot force her to sleep, but is there some way we can get her to want to sleep and take a nap again?

Actions speak louder than words

The other day, I was watching the news when a political ad featuring the politician came across my TV screen. He told what he believed and what he would do if elected. Immediately, I thought, "I wonder if his past voting record in politics mirrored what he was saying."

Everyone can be adopted in God's family

The world is full of people wanting to know, "What is in it for me?" This attitude keeps many from ever checking out God's word and obeying the Gospel. They see no benefit coming their way, so why bother with religion?

We should look back to go forward

I was moved recently after reading an article titled "Down Blige Road" in Richmond Hill Reflections magazine. As "transplanted" African-Americans here in Richmond Hill, it helped us understand and get more insight into the pasts of other African-Americans who lived in, worked in and built this community.

Don't wait until 'someday' to follow God

Life is but for a little while. James wrote, "Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away" (James 4:14). What a great reminder of life's brevity, as it can be seen many times during a year.

Gardening teaches to lean on God

As I usually do, earlier this year I planted a little vegetable garden. It's not too elaborate, but it gives me something to enjoy and provides us with a variety of wonderfully fresh things to eat.

Our past life is behind us, thanks to God
