God remembers you

Well, tonight is not one of my favorite times of the year. No, tonight we "spring forward." That is, we move our clocks ahead one hour so that we can enjoy daylight savings time for the next few months. I have to admit that in enjoy the sun being out later as we move through the summer. But oh how I hate to lose that hour of sleep tonight. And as a pastor I know ...

Who is this Jesus?

I have a habit of reading bumper stickers; some of which I like, some that I think are distasteful, and some which I just don't get.

Contradictions

I am often amazed and amused by those who say that the Bible "contradicts" itself.

Follow the rules

Can you imagine how any of the Olympic games would be played if there was not a rule book? Every team or player would be able to do whatever they wanted to win. Chaos would prevail rather than order. Fairness would be a thing of the past. Therefore, all 35 sports and close to 400 events are governed by rules.

Respecting God's property

A week or so ago my grandson, Zion, was trying to catch butterflies while they were landing on the flowers in front of the house. My wife said to him, "Quit trying to catch my butterflies!" His response was kind of funny but full of truth when he said, "Nana, those butterflies aren't yours, they belong to God."

Faith in the face of fear

Last Sunday in Catholic Churches and in many Protestant Churches that follow the Common Lectionary, we heard from the Gospel of Mark the story about Jesus calming the storm while his disciples showed great fear in the midst of the storm.

Run a Christian race

In order to "run" in the Christian race, you must be on the team, in other words you must be a Christian. There are many people who posses Christian qualities in their life, but they have never obeyed all the rules set forth by God. They feel that they are "Christians" but their feelings do not make it so. It is like the athlete who tries out for the Olympics, but fails to ...

A view of faith versus unbelief

I was reading today about the time a Jewish leader came to Jesus asking Him to do something for him.

Perspective and God's plan

My wife and I have been on vacation this week. We drove up to the north Georgia mountains, spending a few days just outside of Helen. I have to admit something. I love that particular part of the world. The Smoky Mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina, and the somewhat smaller ones in north Georgia are absolutely beautiful places to visit. One of the reasons I enjoy the mountains so ...

A steady diet of the word of God

The Apostle Peter wrote, "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby" (I Peter 2:2).

America's birthday

Yesterday was the 232nd birthday of our great country. I was a history major in college, and I focused particularly on American history. But I still have to admit something. It boggles my mind to consider the imagination and thoughtfulness it took to develop the type of government we have. There were truly a number of great leaders at work in those days.

Our freedom did not come free

This 4th of July we celebrate the freedom we have here in America. We as Americans still enjoy freedoms not experienced and only dreamed of by most of the world's population.

Gods way, part 4: we will follow

As we have been looking at following "God's Way," we have seen that God's way is best, but will we follow "God's Way?"

God's way, part 3: One who almost failed

For the past few weeks we have been discussing "God's Way." When you talk to people about religion many times the words you here are, "Well I think." Before you say this you might want to see what God has to say about mans thoughts compared to His. From the beginning of time we see that someone has always wanted to change what God says. In the garden of Eden God had instructed ...

What is worth investing in?

The other day, as I was walking past my mailbox, I took a long look at it. It is old, faded and slides a little bit forward when one opens it.

Remember all fathers on their day

Tomorrow is Father's Day. We all know that it is not quite the same event that Mother's Day is, and that is fine. We all know the value of a godly mother.

God always offers forgiveness

God sent his Son to pay a debt that man could not and cannot pay - the debt of sin.

A father's love in action

Father's Day does not receive the recognition that Mother's Day receives personally or commercially. Personally, I think Father's Day should have a greater appreciation and a greater recognition based on a biblical prospective.

Why not let God restore your soul?

Last week, I wrote that I have been preaching through the 23rd Psalm. I would like for you to consider an idea from that Psalm that remains a powerful image in my mind.

Seek the word of the Lord

Last week, we began looking at the idea of putting our faith in God. Some people have a problem with this, for they trust only in themselves. Much of this comes from humanistic teaching in our schools today. Our young people are faced with instructors who do not believe in the Bible. Generations are being reared to believe that man has all the answers. This false idea makes it difficult for religious teaching to be accepted.
