What is Mother's Day?

Tomorrow is Mother's Day. I hope that doesn't set off panic and a rush to the mall. But if so, you can thank me later. I learned earlier this week that this is the 100th anniversary of the first Mother's Day Service. The day did not become a legal, national holiday until 1914, but the first official service was held on May 10, 1908.

Your sins will find you out

The other day I was driving through the intersection of Abercorn and Derenne on the way to the hospital. I don't know if the cameras are still there that catch those who run the red light but I know of several who have received a fine in the mail for doing so.

Causes of salvation (part 3)

Over the past couple of weeks we have been looking at the "Causes of Salvation." We have noticed that God the Father, Christ the Son, and the Holy Spirit all are causes of our salvation. Today we will notice another "cause of salvation."

Life of consistency

In the last few months we have seen the weather go from one extreme to another. For instance, last week we saw temperatures in the 80's then at the beginning of this week we saw temperatures in the 30 at night and only in the low 60's in the day and here it is at the end of the week with temperatures in the mid 80's again. We do expect this kind of ...

The Bible tells me so

I heard the story of a man who had taught the Bible to college and seminary students for many years. He had a string of PhD's to his credit, having studied the New Testament all of his life. At a banquet where he was being honored, one person asked him, "What is the greatest theological truth that you have learned from the Bible?" Pausing only briefly, the gentleman replied, "Jesus loves me, this I know. For the Bible tells me so."

The crown of victory, part two

Last week we spoke of the "Crown of Victory'. The gospel message is the "key" to man's salvation. When Jesus told Peter He would give to him the "keys" to the kingdom of heaven. On the day of Pentecost, Peter used the keys; he preached the gospel of Christ.

On reading the Bible

Christians make some audacious claims. We say that it is possible for a human being to know God in a personal way. We claim that Jesus was raised from the dead. We claim that there is more to life than we can see, that there is life after death.

Ask for forgiveness

Some people think that because they have lived such a wild or evil life in their past that God will never be able to forgive them. They think because they have chosen a certain lifestyle that God may be too offended. The sad thing about all this is that we Christians seem to insinuate this misconception when we refer to certain sins or sinners. Salvation was available to persons such as Adolf Hitler, ...

Ways Satan works

Man's greatest enemy is Satan. His every goal is wicked and evil, yet he makes his product look so attractive. If he could only be seen as he is described by Peter, "as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8). Then maybe people would take Peter's advice as is found in the same verse, "Be sober, be vigilant;" Many are anything but sober and vigilant when it ...

Youth: some promise for the future

In 1 Timothy 4:12 the Apostle Paul tells Timothy, "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers..."

Spring is in the air, appreciate it

Spring is definitely in the air. There are blooms on certain plants. The grass will soon begin to green up. And gardens will be planted. Can I encourage you to think about something?

Don’t misunderstand God’s promise, he always keeps it

Some misunderstand God's promise of eternal life. They have fallen into the trap of thinking that they can do what they want in the name of religion and it will be acceptable to God. My friend God has never allowed man to dictate what to do to obey God. Even when Christ walked among men this false belief was held by many. Notice the words of Jesus, "Not every one ...

Remember the meaning of Easter, 'Jesus is alive'

It is the day before Easter. Think what it must have been like almost 2000 years ago on that day – before the first Easter.

Mothers are joys and privileges

Eight years ago this April, my mother passed away. It has been a while since that thought has caused me to burst out in tears, but it still fills me with deep sadness. I miss her terribly. I would give just about anything to be able to hear her deep Southern drawl on the telephone again.

Heed wise words of the Master

Jesus said, "He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him; the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day" (John 12:48). Knowing how much depends on obeying his word, a study of the Bible should be important to everyone.

God shows wack back to salvation

God created man to worship and love him. He had prepared a place for man to dwell, providing all of man's needs. (Genesis 1, 2). In doing this, God allowed for his creation, man, to be able to decide to obey him or to follow another way (Joshua 24:15).
