Do you believe in Santa Claus?

This is a question that you will hear time and time again during this Christmas season; including many movies where this is the key issue. Kids will ask their parents or grandparents if Santa is really real or just a made up character. I am not going to give you advice on how to answer this very important question, but may God give us all wisdom and guidance as we attempt to without sapping the fun out of this season.

Get ready

I will never forget the events of the first meal that my wife cooked for me. My "then fiancée" took had invited me come to dinner on a particular day. I later learned that she carefully selected the groceries, and then took a half day from work in order to prepare the meal for me. Imagine her feelings when I sat down and wolfed down a plate full (and seconds) in less than ...

The Bible speaks of Heaven, part 2

What a great blessing it is to know that heaven will be ours for eternity. Many times it is said of heaven that is a going home. The use of the word "home" gives a sense of peace and comfort to the idea of heaven. A home is the place where no matter what befalls us during the day we know it is our safe haven, for there the ones who care about ...

Be thankful for the blessings He gives

It is the week leading up to Thanksgiving. We must admit that the actual giving of thanks can get lost in the shuffle of the week. After all, look at all that we will be doing. Traveling to be with family is a huge issue. Wednesday, the day before the holiday, is the largest travel day in the United States.

Thoughts on an unsuccessful try

The other day I went to the hospital to see a couple of parishioners. Before I went in I attempted to eat some hamburgers I had picked up at a drive through, from which some grease dripped down on my shirt which I first thought was water.

Trust the Lord all year long

Well, did you finish your Christmas shopping yesterday? Did you do your part to stimulate the economy? I have to admit that I probably did not (I say probably, because I wrote this before the week of Thanksgiving).

It is a good thing to give thanks

At this time of year many stop and take stock of all for which they should be thankful. There are so many blessing to be enjoyed. Health, family, friends, prosperity, jobs, and the list could go on and on. Taking time to give thanks is a good thing, but it should be happening continually not just on one special day. Everyone should also realize to whom the giving of thanks should be addressed.

Thankful in all circumstances

I Thessalonians 5:18 says, "Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." Paul first tells us to give thanks "in" every circumstance not "for" every circumstance.

Go and seek the crown, part two

As Paul neared the end of his life he wrote in 2 Tim. 4:8, "Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing."

Setting up false gods

Last week my wife and I went to Charleston, S.C., to celebrate our anniversary of 30 years. While there, we took a tour of a mansion built in the nineteenth century. As we walked through this home we were directed to a room that was described as the owners' "religious room." It had an alter from a catholic church, which I had no problem with, but what was on this alter and around ...

How's your heart, part 2

E. A. Hoffman wrote a song entitled, "Is Thy Heart Right with God?" in which he asked several pointed questions concerning the individual's relationship with God. Mr. Hoffman asked, "Hast thou dominion o'er self and o'er sin? We either control sin or sin controls us. Some would try and ride the fence, but it simply cannot be done. We must choose God or Satan. "No man can serve two masters: for either he ...

How's your heart, part 1

The medical field had risen to the task of trying to inform us all that we need to take care of our hearts. February was heart month. This year one of the main points brought out by the American Heart Association has been the fact that heart disease is a real and present danger to women. This fact surprises many, but the static's tell us it is a fact.

Mothers are joys and privileges

Eight years ago this April, my mother passed away. It has been a while since that thought has caused me to burst out in tears, but it still fills me with deep sadness. I miss her terribly. I would give just about anything to be able to hear her deep Southern drawl on the telephone again.

Heed wise words of the Master

Jesus said, "He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him; the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day" (John 12:48). Knowing how much depends on obeying his word, a study of the Bible should be important to everyone.

God shows wack back to salvation

God created man to worship and love him. He had prepared a place for man to dwell, providing all of man's needs. (Genesis 1, 2). In doing this, God allowed for his creation, man, to be able to decide to obey him or to follow another way (Joshua 24:15).
