On reading the Bible

Christians make some audacious claims. We say that it is possible for a human being to know God in a personal way. We claim that Jesus was raised from the dead. We claim that there is more to life than we can see, that there is life after death.

Ask for forgiveness

Some people think that because they have lived such a wild or evil life in their past that God will never be able to forgive them. They think because they have chosen a certain lifestyle that God may be too offended. The sad thing about all this is that we Christians seem to insinuate this misconception when we refer to certain sins or sinners. Salvation was available to persons such as Adolf Hitler, ...

Ways Satan works

Man's greatest enemy is Satan. His every goal is wicked and evil, yet he makes his product look so attractive. If he could only be seen as he is described by Peter, "as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8). Then maybe people would take Peter's advice as is found in the same verse, "Be sober, be vigilant;" Many are anything but sober and vigilant when it ...

Youth: some promise for the future

In 1 Timothy 4:12 the Apostle Paul tells Timothy, "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers..."

Spring is in the air, appreciate it

Spring is definitely in the air. There are blooms on certain plants. The grass will soon begin to green up. And gardens will be planted. Can I encourage you to think about something?

Don’t misunderstand God’s promise, he always keeps it

Some misunderstand God's promise of eternal life. They have fallen into the trap of thinking that they can do what they want in the name of religion and it will be acceptable to God. My friend God has never allowed man to dictate what to do to obey God. Even when Christ walked among men this false belief was held by many. Notice the words of Jesus, "Not every one ...

Remember the meaning of Easter, 'Jesus is alive'

It is the day before Easter. Think what it must have been like almost 2000 years ago on that day – before the first Easter.

The will, seen in Father and Son

Jesus freely chose to die. No wonder that a current internet site asks rhetorically if He were not complicit in His own death?

There is a standard in religion (part 2)

Last week we saw the need for a standard to be followed in religion. "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works (II Tim. 3:16,17). Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old ...

What is truth?

In the book of John before Jesus was crucified he had been sent to Pilate, the Roman governor. This Pilate had the responsibility of either releasing Jesus or handing him over to be crucified. Jesus told Pilate that he had came into the world to testify to the truth and that everyone on the side of truth listens to him. At this Pilate asked this aged old question, "What is truth?"

There is a standard, part 1

While doing some mission work on the Island of Grenada some years back, I was asked by a gentleman, "Why there are so many different beliefs in the world?" That was and is a good question.

No to alcohol on Sundays, and every day in between

There has been a lot of debate recently concerning the topic of alcohol, especially the change of the law regarding the selling of it on Sunday in restaurants. I do not see a difference between serving it on Sunday verses on Monday, Tuesday etc.

Is there a God? (part 2)

Last week I posed two questions: Is there a God?, and If so, what is He like?

Know God

There was a little girl busy at work, surrounded by crayons, markers and paper. When her mom asked what she was doing she said, "I'm drawing a picture of God." Her mom replied, "But, sweetheart, no one knows what God looks like." Quickly the little one responded, "That's because I haven't finished my picture yet."

A tribute to Jimmy Burnsed

We read in the scripture where Jesus confronted people and asked them to become His followers and there were some who did. He exemplified what it meant to be obedient to God the Father. His disciples were to do the same as well as follow Him in His mission to bring salvation to the lost.

God's strategy and Satan's tactics

While reading a book on business, I came across an interesting idea: A business owner should have a strategic view and not a tactical view of his or her business.

God invites you to trust Him

I believe that God is absolutely sovereign. That means that he is in control of all things, and that nothing is outside of his authority. He is the one and only God. He knows all things. He is all-powerful.

God plans for man's salvation

When man was created and placed in the Garden of Eden, God's plan of creation was completed. Man giving in to Satan turned this scene into a wicked and ugly one.

Mothers are joys and privileges

Eight years ago this April, my mother passed away. It has been a while since that thought has caused me to burst out in tears, but it still fills me with deep sadness. I miss her terribly. I would give just about anything to be able to hear her deep Southern drawl on the telephone again.

Heed wise words of the Master

Jesus said, "He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him; the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day" (John 12:48). Knowing how much depends on obeying his word, a study of the Bible should be important to everyone.
