With the advent of summer, many churches in and around Liberty County are having vacation Bible schools.
In our country we have just observed May 31 as Memorial Day. How fitting it is to remember all those who have served to make sure we can have the freedoms we enjoy, and especially to remember those who have given their very lives for us. Over the years to some this special day has lost its meaning. Parents may have failed to explain the importance of the day, rather seeing it as a day of going to the beach, or having friends over for a cookout, or some other form of recreation. Proper recreation is not a bad thing ...
A few weeks back, one of our older gentlemen at the church dropped by the church.
It really was amazing how it happened. I'm not sure what he did to change. But when I was about 15 years old my dad was not very smart. He had all kinds of beliefs and rules that were old fashioned and foolish. I even got to the point that I prayed that he would get smarter and more up to date. It only took about 10 years, but that is actually what happened. By the time I was 25 he was one of the smartest men I knew. And he had not even gone to school. He just ...
While some churches tend to scale back on activities during the summer months, Live Oak Church of God in Hinesville has a variety of upcoming events planned.
Many of us remember the TV commercial about the elderly woman who was alone, fell in her home and "couldn't get up." She found herself in a bad situation. We all remember the woman's cry for help: "Help, I've fallen and I can't get up."
If you have ever hiked through a wooded area you understand, "following the path."
Jesus said, "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." During this Memorial Day weekend, we take the time to remember those who have given their lives for us. I know that we, as a nation, have often debated the merits of a particular war. The reasons for conflict have been many and varied.
A few weeks ago I started walking/running in the mornings, mainly for health reasons. It has been hard to be consistent so I only do this activity a few days a week.
This weekend, most of us are off from work and are enjoying life and the weekend.
The Apostle Paul wrote, "Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God" (2 Cor. 1:2 – 4). In a world where trouble waits around every corner it is good to know that Christians do not have to face trouble alone, we ...
Writing a column like this can be a challenge. After all, I also preach and teach two or three times every week. I don't want to use the same material over and over. I want to say something fresh and relevant. Still, the Christian message really hasn't changed in the last 2000 years. It is still about what Jesus did for us when He gave His life so that we might live.
Recently in a youth meeting we were discussing prayer requests when one of the teens started talking about a new student at his school. The student got into a discussion about religion and let him and his friends, who are professed Christians, know that they didn't want anything to do with God and would rather serve Satan.
Members of Baconton Missionary Baptist Church of Walthourville are celebrating 141 years of service. For most of its existence, the church was in Allenhurst. However, the city of Walthourville recently incorporated the land the church sits on.
On behalf of the United Ministerial Alliance of Liberty County, I congratulate everyone who is graduating this season. We know it's not easy to complete such a great task, but through it all you did it.
Fall started this week. Can you feel it in the crisp and cool mornings and evenings?
John reveals to all that there is a battle being fought every day. It is a battle that involves everyone on the face of the Earth.
The other day, I was out at our community dock and someone from the community said to me, "I really like your shirt."
I often wonder who reads the articles I write for the newspaper.
"A soap manufacturer and a [preacher] were walking together down a street in a large city. The soap manufacturer casually said, 'The Gospel you preach hasn't done much good, has it? Just observe. There is still a lot of wickedness in the world, and a lot of wicked people, too!' The [preacher] made no reply until they passed a dirty little child making mud pies in the gutter. Seizing the opportunity, the [preacher] said, 'I see that soap hasn't done much good in the world, for there is much dirt and many dirty people around.' The soap manufacturer ...
All throughout Jesus' ministry, he constantly condemned the religious leaders of his day for being like their forefathers.
I'm sure you have seen the commercial at some point. She says, "It has to be true. I read it on the Internet." And then she meets her date -the "French supermodel." And you chuckle because you know someone who is that naïve.
Do you understand that Jesus loves you? Yes, you - you are important to God.
Recently, a celebrity made the news because of an illness and death.
I recently spent much of a day on hold with customer service - with two different companies. I pressed 2 and 3 and the pound sign and almost every other button on my phone as I was transferred back and forth.
