Fires can teach us a spiritual lesson

As most of you know, until the other day we in the Coastal Empire have been under a drought and a mandatory no burn restriction. No burn permits were being issued for fear of fires getting out of control. We did get around five inches of rain so that burn permits are now being issued.

The assurance of heaven available, free

I have lived in the Richmond Hill area for over 6 years and this year for the first time I have purchased flood insurance. I am convinced that we are living on borrowed time and that one year our area will be struck by a hurricane. It may be after I'm dead and gone or it may be this year. After reading about all the problems the home owners had who didn't have flood insurance in New Orleans, I finally made the plunge. I am now fully covered if my home is destroyed by wind or high water ...

What is right?

Every person from what ever background has the opportunity to do what is right. As we see in the news each evening not everyone makes use of their opportunities. Some determine to do wrong and forget right. Society today wants to blame such bad choices on the things around the individual. In some cases perhaps and only perhaps this might be true. Most of the time the individual decides to do what ever it is they are going to do because they determine to do the thing.

We are never alone, even in tough times

A few years ago I was in a small boat on Lake St. Clair, located between Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario. The day started off quite well. Fifteen minutes after we anchored I was reeling in a 30 inch muskie, and was very excited (I didn't realize that is actually relatively small for that species).

There is no cloning of the human soul

I saw again the other day on the Internet that the subject of cloning came up again; I guess it will never die until the world ends.

Trust in His word

If our faith is such that we fully trust in God, then truly how grand are His promises. Paul the great preacher of the gospel had such a faith. Many hardships befell him (II Cor. 11:23-28), yet near the end of his life he penned these words, "For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give ...

If you have had a bad day, forgive anyway

One of the biggest shows on television the last few years has been "American Idol." "Idolmania" has been big all over. After all, I don't even have to explain it when is say the name, Sanjaya. Just Google his name and see what I mean.

Getting right to the root of the matter

I have been noticing an influx of mole activity in my front yard recently. In the past those varmints have limited their destruction to the side and back yards where it is mostly woods. My dog digs out one from the ground every once in a while and I flatten the ground back down occasionally. I have even considered putting out mole traps or even waiting to see if I could see them push the dirt up so that I could dig them out; but who has time for that. Everything I have tried or thought about trying has very ...

Just words

There is an old song entitled "Angry Words". The lyrics tell of how we should never let angry words escape from our lips, but that the best impulse of our heart might check those words lest they spoil the lips. Another verse states how brightest links of life may be broken by a single angry word. How true are these words, how many times have husbands or wives said things in a moment of anger and wished so much to be able to recall those words but it is to late. Parents have been guilty of the same thing, concerning ...

God keeps His promises

God keeps all of His promises. He made a promise to Abraham in the long ago that of Abraham He would make a great nation and through him all families of the earth would be blessed (Gen. 12:1-3). God also promised him a land for his descendants (Gen. 15:18-21). The land promise was fulfilled as the children of Israel conquered the land of Canaan. Of this we read, "And the LORD gave unto Israel all the land which he sware to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein. …. There failed not ought of any ...

We need rain to fall

The fact of needing rain is not a news flash to most people; especially to those who have farms and gardens or those who like green lawns.

One of the most fascinating books in the Bible is Revelation. Many books have been written and movies produced in attempts to better understand the end times.

Actions speak louder than words

The other day, I was watching the news when a political ad featuring the politician came across my TV screen. He told what he believed and what he would do if elected. Immediately, I thought, "I wonder if his past voting record in politics mirrored what he was saying."

Everyone can be adopted in God's family

The world is full of people wanting to know, "What is in it for me?" This attitude keeps many from ever checking out God's word and obeying the Gospel. They see no benefit coming their way, so why bother with religion?

We should look back to go forward

I was moved recently after reading an article titled "Down Blige Road" in Richmond Hill Reflections magazine. As "transplanted" African-Americans here in Richmond Hill, it helped us understand and get more insight into the pasts of other African-Americans who lived in, worked in and built this community.

Don't wait until 'someday' to follow God

Life is but for a little while. James wrote, "Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away" (James 4:14). What a great reminder of life's brevity, as it can be seen many times during a year.

Gardening teaches to lean on God

As I usually do, earlier this year I planted a little vegetable garden. It's not too elaborate, but it gives me something to enjoy and provides us with a variety of wonderfully fresh things to eat.
