Is there a God? (part 2)

Last week I posed two questions: Is there a God?, and If so, what is He like?

Know God

There was a little girl busy at work, surrounded by crayons, markers and paper. When her mom asked what she was doing she said, "I'm drawing a picture of God." Her mom replied, "But, sweetheart, no one knows what God looks like." Quickly the little one responded, "That's because I haven't finished my picture yet."

A tribute to Jimmy Burnsed

We read in the scripture where Jesus confronted people and asked them to become His followers and there were some who did. He exemplified what it meant to be obedient to God the Father. His disciples were to do the same as well as follow Him in His mission to bring salvation to the lost.

Are we forgiving servants? (2)

Last week we looked at a parable Jesus used to teach about forgiveness. The unforgiving servant was delivered to the tormentors. Jesus said, "So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses" (Matt. 18:35).

Reflections after the passing of a good friend

The word came to us last weekend. A good friend, 47-years-old, died of cancer. My wife, Tina, had worked closely with Brenda to start a weekday preschool program in our church in Indiana. Brenda had become director when we moved. We visited the church last June, and Brenda gave Tina a tour of the new preschool facilities. They were both so excited.

Are we forgiving servants? (1)

We need to thank God for the fact that Jesus came to earth, died at Calvary and rose again the third day. Without the blood of Christ no man could be saved from sin.

God always offers second chances

I was only in the house for two or three minutes. But by the time I returned to my back porch flames and smoke were pouring from the grill. The house was never in any danger. But the steaks were ruined. Burned to a crisp. Even the dog looked the other way.

Nobody enjoys privacy more than Yours Truly. I confess I am not a very happy camper when that privacy is compromised in any fashion. Recently, I endured a tremendous trespass on my privacy.

Seek comfort from God, part 2

Job stands out as one who, in the face of trials, remained faithful to God. He lost most of his possessions, all his children were killed, his so-called friends tormented them with their ideas of what his problem was, even his wife told him to curse God and die.

He is not silent; we are not listening

Yesterday was my wife's birthday. I'm not the smartest guy in the world, but I do know a few things. I most certainly will not reveal to you her age. And at some point over this weekend I will either take her to dinner, or will cook myself, and I will also give a small gift of some kind. In other words, we will celebrate, but there won't be large amounts of fanfare.

John 3:16

The other day I just happened to glance across my desk in my office and spotted a new devotional book I received in the mail. It was titled "John 3:16" and was written by the popular author, Max Lucado.

We must never be satisfied with who we are

There is a tension in every life, and it is only exaggerated if you are a Christian. That tension has to do with satisfaction in life. God calls us to be "content" or satisfied with our circumstance in life. And yet He never wants us to be satisfied to be who we are right now. There is the constant call to grow, to become more, to be His disciple.

Looking back at 'The Bible': Why the miniseries was successful, and where it has led

Shortly before the release of the film "Son of God" in 2014, Mark Burnett and Roma Downey visited Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. During a speech to the students at the Christian university, Burnett, an accomplished television producer, discussed the opposition the married couple felt when they started pitching a miniseries based on the Bible.
