Life of consistency

In the last few months we have seen the weather go from one extreme to another. For instance, last week we saw temperatures in the 80's then at the beginning of this week we saw temperatures in the 30 at night and only in the low 60's in the day and here it is at the end of the week with temperatures in the mid 80's again. We do expect this kind of inconsistency with the weather in the springtime and we know that as summer approaches it will just be consistently hot.

The Bible tells me so

I heard the story of a man who had taught the Bible to college and seminary students for many years. He had a string of PhD's to his credit, having studied the New Testament all of his life. At a banquet where he was being honored, one person asked him, "What is the greatest theological truth that you have learned from the Bible?" Pausing only briefly, the gentleman replied, "Jesus loves me, this I know. For the Bible tells me so."

The crown of victory, part two

Last week we spoke of the "Crown of Victory'. The gospel message is the "key" to man's salvation. When Jesus told Peter He would give to him the "keys" to the kingdom of heaven. On the day of Pentecost, Peter used the keys; he preached the gospel of Christ.

On reading the Bible

Christians make some audacious claims. We say that it is possible for a human being to know God in a personal way. We claim that Jesus was raised from the dead. We claim that there is more to life than we can see, that there is life after death.

Ask for forgiveness

Some people think that because they have lived such a wild or evil life in their past that God will never be able to forgive them. They think because they have chosen a certain lifestyle that God may be too offended. The sad thing about all this is that we Christians seem to insinuate this misconception when we refer to certain sins or sinners. Salvation was available to persons such as Adolf Hitler, Osama Bin Laden, Charles Manson, Timothy McVay, and Jeffrey Dahmer. No matter who you could think of and no matter what their sin was, complete forgiveness is ...

Ways Satan works

Man's greatest enemy is Satan. His every goal is wicked and evil, yet he makes his product look so attractive. If he could only be seen as he is described by Peter, "as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8). Then maybe people would take Peter's advice as is found in the same verse, "Be sober, be vigilant;" Many are anything but sober and vigilant when it comes to understanding Satan and his work.

Spring is in the air, appreciate it

Spring is definitely in the air. There are blooms on certain plants. The grass will soon begin to green up. And gardens will be planted. Can I encourage you to think about something?

Youth: some promise for the future

In 1 Timothy 4:12 the Apostle Paul tells Timothy, "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers..."

Remember the meaning of Easter, 'Jesus is alive'

It is the day before Easter. Think what it must have been like almost 2000 years ago on that day – before the first Easter.

The will, seen in Father and Son

Jesus freely chose to die. No wonder that a current internet site asks rhetorically if He were not complicit in His own death?

There is a standard in religion (part 2)

Last week we saw the need for a standard to be followed in religion. "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works (II Tim. 3:16,17). Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost (II Peter 1:20,21).

What is truth?

In the book of John before Jesus was crucified he had been sent to Pilate, the Roman governor. This Pilate had the responsibility of either releasing Jesus or handing him over to be crucified. Jesus told Pilate that he had came into the world to testify to the truth and that everyone on the side of truth listens to him. At this Pilate asked this aged old question, "What is truth?"

Don't settle for less with the Lord

The day after Thanksgiving, we began our Christmas decorating. It always is my job to get everything down from the attic, put the tree up and put lights on it. My wife does most of the rest. I put a few decorations near the top, including "the topper." Any outside decorations usually are my responsibilities, too.

Life can be ultimate carnival ride

If you are a fan either of the Bulldogs or the Yellow Jackets, you rode that coaster hard last Saturday. In all of my years of watching football (or any other sport), I do not remember a time when a game has swung back and forth like that. Even a basketball game with a one-point difference doesn't feel like that.
