Congratulations, you've made it

On behalf of the United Ministerial Alliance of Liberty County, I congratulate everyone who is graduating this season. We know it's not easy to complete such a great task, but through it all you did it.

Try to be ready

I just received news that my favorite uncle is close to passing away. He had cancer a few years ago that went into remission but recently it returned. The good news is that he has trusted Christ for forgiveness and has assurance of where he will end up after death.

See yourself in the light of His word

The older one gets and the more one tries to do, the more the years seem to fly by. From time to time we need to reflect on what is going on in our lives. Most will do this about school, jobs, finances, etc., and it is good to do those things. But let us not forget to look at our spiritual well being.

Be generous with your gift to God

One of the funniest lines I've ever read was in a newspaper in Las Vegas, Nevada, the day after the Southern Baptist Convention met there in the late 1980's. I know, who would have thought that Southern Baptists, of all people, would meet in Las Vegas. But we did, and evidently made an impression on a number of people. The writer simply stated, "Ten thousand Southern Baptists descended on Las Vegas earlier this week with a twenty dollar bill in one hand, and a copy of the Ten Commandments in the other. They didn't break either one ...

Remember the importance of family

I remember being in church a number of years ago when my pastor was making closing announcements. The week had been designated "Home and Family Week," and family had been the sermon topic for the day.

Christians grow just as all things in nature

This time of year the grass has been growing, the trees have budded and the shrubs and bushes have flowered. This is all a natural process, and if for some reason it doesn't occur we know that there is a problem.

Walk the journey with Jesus, not alone

Some today are making life's journey without Jesus. They have never realized how much He is needed in each and every person's life. Others believe that if one member of their family is religious then that is enough for the whole family. This simply is not true, for each person is accountable for themselves.

Keepers of the charge

The old hymn opens with the verse "A charge to keep I have, a God to glorify, who gave His son my soul to save, and fit it for the sky."

Church mothers play important role

"The aged women likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed."

The Lord has a plan, purpose for all stages of life

There can be no denying this one fact: I'm getting older. If the mirror doesn't remind me, there are always those feeble attempts at running. I feel like Fred Flinstone's car. In my mind things are moving, but I'm getting nowhere. There was the time when I could run all day long, barely breathing hard. But that day is long gone.

God has answers to life's questions

Man, it seems, has always had questions about something since the beginning of time. Some have sailed the oceans to search for new lands just to answer the question, "What is out there?" Others have searched the world over to find the answer to the questions of life.

Those with titles have responsibilities

The other evening I was helping my wife with a drama performance that she instructs for our local community education department. As the kids were getting ready for their pre-performance practice, one of the kids started talking to me about a performance of "Charlie Brown" that is using our church facility this weekend. He went on to make a statement and question that I had never been presented with.

Keep God's word fresh, consistent

Not long ago I was telling one of my sons about a trip I took the summer I turned 16 years old. I was telling it as if he already knew the basic facts, and I was filling in some details. But then he said something that surprised me.

Actions speak louder than words

The other day, I was watching the news when a political ad featuring the politician came across my TV screen. He told what he believed and what he would do if elected. Immediately, I thought, "I wonder if his past voting record in politics mirrored what he was saying."

Everyone can be adopted in God's family

The world is full of people wanting to know, "What is in it for me?" This attitude keeps many from ever checking out God's word and obeying the Gospel. They see no benefit coming their way, so why bother with religion?
