In times of uncertainties, have faith

Just ask the average Joe on the street about the economy and the future and it won't take long to realize that people are full of uncertainties. We don't know who will be our next president and how it will effect our country and the world as well. We don't know how high gas prices will go or when someone is going to do something about them.

Gods way in caring for others (part 2)

"Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets" (Matt. 22:36-40). The occasion of the preceding ...

Try on an attitude of gratitude today

It is the first day of summer. That's not as big of a deal here as it has been in other places I have lived. After all, we have been enjoying summer type weather for a few weeks now. But I have to tell you this. When I lived in Michigan we gave thanks when the first day of summer rolled around. Sometimes we were still wearing light jackets. But we were grateful for the change.

Wedding season

The marrying season has arrived. It seems like June is the month for weddings. You may be attending one today. My family is. And we had one last week, too. Neither one was at our church, but rather both were for family members in other places.

No matter what happens, we win

From the chatter both nationally as well as locally I perceive that the outlook for our economy is bleak if not depressing. Gas prices have soared to almost $4 per gallon which effects the price of everything else. Housing foreclosures are at an all-time high and for the first time since the great depression have housing and property values dropped nation wide. We are at war in Iraq and Afghanistan with the threat ...

The battle continues

"Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever (1 John 2:15-17).

A battle is raging

John reveals to all that there is a battle being fought every day. It is a battle that involves everyone on the face of the earth. The world is full of temptations for young and old alike. Today there seems to be less time for the home, family, and God. A struggle goes on to provide and maintain a standard of living, and the proper spiritual nurturing. "Love not the world, neither the ...

Promise Keepers

A few years ago Promise Keepers was a very active, very popular movement. It is not as strong as it was then, but that's okay. In many ways God used it to make an impact upon the lives of many men. If there are newer and better ways to do that in the future, then He will raise them up, too.

Being saved is about true repentance

Repentance is a word we don't hear very much about in today's Christian environment but it is a word heavily used in scripture. To repent means that we feel sorry for our sins; sorry enough to decide to change our way of living and thinking and sorry enough to turn from following self to following Christ. In other words, it is all about change.

Remembering the sacrifice

It is Memorial Day weekend. What does that mean to you? The unfortunate thing is that for many it simply means a long weekend where they can slip off to the beach, the lake, the mountains, or somewhere else for a bit of rest and relaxation. And there is nothing inherently wrong with that.

The causes of salvation, part 5

Over the past few weeks we have been looking at the "Causes of Salvation." We have noticed that God the Father, Christ the Son, the Holy Spirit, the word of God and faith all are causes of our salvation. Today we will notice another "cause of salvation."

God provides fellowship, bringing people together

Psalms 133 says, "How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!" He's talking about a fellowship that happens between individuals with the absence of strife.

Mothers are joys and privileges

Eight years ago this April, my mother passed away. It has been a while since that thought has caused me to burst out in tears, but it still fills me with deep sadness. I miss her terribly. I would give just about anything to be able to hear her deep Southern drawl on the telephone again.

Heed wise words of the Master

Jesus said, "He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him; the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day" (John 12:48). Knowing how much depends on obeying his word, a study of the Bible should be important to everyone.

God shows wack back to salvation

God created man to worship and love him. He had prepared a place for man to dwell, providing all of man's needs. (Genesis 1, 2). In doing this, God allowed for his creation, man, to be able to decide to obey him or to follow another way (Joshua 24:15).
