ATLANTA - State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said the Georgia Department of Labor will begin a series of workshops this week to help thousands of laid-off Georgia education employees transition into new careers. The first workshops are today and Saturday at the Hilton Garden Inn in Albany, Atlanta Airport Marriott, Atlanta Marriott Century Center, Macon State College and the Marietta campus of Chattahoochee Technical College. All workshops will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

SAVANNAH - Imperial Sugar and the U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration are discussing a possible settlement of proposed fines against the company for a deadly 2008 refinery explosion near Savannah. The talks have prompted an administrative law judge to postpone a hearing on the fines by the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission scheduled for next Tuesday in Savannah.
