Workshops for laid-off educators starting
ATLANTA - State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said the Georgia Department of Labor will begin a series of workshops this week to help thousands of laid-off Georgia education employees transition into new careers. The first workshops are today and Saturday at the Hilton Garden Inn in Albany, Atlanta Airport Marriott, Atlanta Marriott Century Center, Macon State College and the Marietta campus of Chattahoochee Technical College. All workshops will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
April jobless numbers drop a little in area
ATLANTA - The preliminary, unadjusted unemployment rate in Coastal Georgia declined to 8.6 percent in April, down six-tenths of a percentage point in March, according to the Georgia Department of Labor.
Georgia ports report 25 percent growth
SAVANNAH – Georgia Ports Authority's Executive Director Curtis J. Foltz announced this week that the GPA experienced 25.6 percent container growth in April and has recorded five consecutive months of double-digit growth through its ports.
Open house at Plantation Lumber
Plantation Lumber held its annual open house on May 20. Dallas Daniel and his staff served low country boil, pork loin, hamburgers and hot dogs with desserts to more than 250 visitors. Live music and games provided a fun and family friendly atmosphere.
Customer appreciation at Southeastern
Southeastern Bank hosted it s 2010 annual customer appreciation day on May 21. Visitors were treated to free hot dogs and refreshments and a classic car show from local favorites Over the Hill Gang.

FORT VALLEY (AP) - The harvesting, packaging and selling of Georgia's peaches has begun, and growers are cautiously looking for a bumper crop this year. Robert Dickey, owner of Dickey Farms in Musella, said conditions were so favorable that growers had to thin the crop.

Imperial, OSHA in settlement talks
SAVANNAH - Imperial Sugar and the U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration are discussing a possible settlement of proposed fines against the company for a deadly 2008 refinery explosion near Savannah. The talks have prompted an administrative law judge to postpone a hearing on the fines by the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission scheduled for next Tuesday in Savannah.
Local woman on statewide utility board
Chris McDermott of Richmond Hill was re-elected recently to a three-year term as a member director of the board of Georgia Transmission Corporation. She also serves on the board of directors for Coastal Electric Membership Corporation.
