Foresters say prescribed burns prevent wildfires

Residents living near Fort Stewart probably have noticed a little smoke recently. Bob Tanner, fire operations team leader for Fort Stewart's Forestry Branch, said not to worry. He said the Army deliberately conducts "prescribed burns" in specific areas from March through June and over the Christmas holidays to prevent uncontrolled wildfires. Each area is burned on a three-year cycle, he said.

Bryan Public Safety Day is April 13

The Bryan County Fire Department and the South Bryan Volunteer Firefighters Association will host their 11th annual Public Safety Day from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. April 13 at the First Baptist Church parking lot at 9184 Hwy 144 in Richmond Hill.

Old cannonball blown up

A 100-plus-year-old cannonball that was found at a Liberty County landfill and taken to a home in the Pine Ridge subdivision safely was removed by Fort Stewart's Explosive Ordnance Disposal team Feb. 27, Liberty County Emergency Management Agency Director Mike Hodges said.

Pembroke man gets 20 years in prison

One of three Pembroke men responsible for two kidnappings in Bryan County in 2011 and 2012 has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in the incidents.

Body identified as Fort Stewart resident

The body of a man discovered Feb. 20 in Richmond Hill alongside Interstate 95, near the 144 interchange, has been identified as Charles Michael Stoyle, according to Richmond Hill Police Department Chief of Detectives Dana Strickland.

Midway bank robbed

The Heritage Bank in Midway was robbed during the lunch hour Friday. Midway Police Chief Kelli Morningstar only could confirm the bank was robbed at 12:39 p.m. before deferring all questions to the Liberty County Sheriff's Office.
