Pin likely put in bread after it left bakery

Derst Baking Company President Paul Frankum said Wednesday he's 99 percent certain a straight pin found by a Richmond Hill customer in a loaf of the company's bread was put there after it was made because "everything goes through a metal detector before it leaves the bakery."

Tara Nielsen wins "BCES Biggest Loser Contest"!With the help of the Bryan County Health Department's recording the weekly weigh ins, Bryan County Emergency Services hosted an 8-week "Biggest Loser" contest for anyone wishing to participate. Although several people signed up, and some even lost more weight, only one person completed all the requirements for the 8-week program. Tara Nielsen, wife of Captain Jeff Nielsen, was dedicated to the program and stuck it out for the entire 8-weeks. She actually didn't have a ton of weight to lose but I believe she was more focused on getting in ...

County to hold budget workshop 3 p.m. Tuesday

"You only get one shot at life"

Richmond Hill's Zach Broome made the University of South Carolina football team as a walk-on earlier this year and will be on the Gamecocks roster in 2011. That apparently makes Broome the first player from Richmond Hill High School to play on a Southeastern Conference team. Broome, who is 6-foot-3 and weighs 205 pounds, will be at wide receiver for South Carolina.

BoE passes temporary spending plan

Clarification: Superintendent John Oliver isn't getting a raise, according to Chief Finance Officer Melanie James. Under the projected 2011 fiscal year budget discussed at Thursday's school board meeting, the compensation for the superintendent was listed at $148,523, up from $139,452 in FY 2010.
