“For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” — John 3:16
In a few days we will celebrate Christmas. After Thanksgiving, it seems like the days fly by and before you know it, the big day is here.
We spend endless hours preparing for Christmas. Our days are filled with shopping, decorating, planning menus, attending one party after another and worrying about how much money is being spent.
We become frustrated when trying to buy suitable gifts at reasonable prices. Merchants lure shoppers with 50 percent off sales and even buy two, get one free bargains. There are all kinds of enticements to get shoppers into stores and convince them to drop a few more dollars. Malls extend their hours of operation to give customers more time to shop and spend.
But even with all the hustle and bustle, we must never forget God’s gift. His gift is the reason for this season of giving and cheer. Unlike the buy two, get one free deals, this gift really is free.
We often miss the true meaning of Christmas and the real reason for the season. We allow the stress of a commercialized holiday and the secularization of Christmas to cause us to miss the most important moments.
More than 2,000 years ago, the best gift mankind has ever received was born on Christmas. Born to the Virgin Mary, this gift did not come with any fanfare. There was no CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX or MSNBC to break the news of this amazing event. Yet it was the greatest thing to ever happen in this world.
The gifts we buy for others often have to be returned because they don’t fit, they malfunction or they’re not well-liked. But the best and most perfect gift, which came to us on Christmas Day, will never have to be returned. This gift has all the special qualities that we want and need.
First of all, God’s one and only true Christmas gift is available to everyone. A person’s background, job, financial status or education has nothing to do with their ability to accept this gift.
Second, this gift is one-size-fits-all. It does not matter if you are a size two, seven, 10 or 20, this gift will fit you. You may be four feet tall or seven feet tall. You may be petite, thin or a little fluffy. You might be 6 years old or 96 years old. It doesn’t matter. This gift will fit.
Third, this gift has is a lifetime guarantee. Some gifts may have a one-year, two-year or even a 10-year warranty. God’s gift to us, however, has a lifetime guarantee and you will never need to replace it. The gift won’t shrink, fade, deteriorate or malfunction. You will never want to replace or discard this gift.
This gift, God’s only begotten son, was sent into the world to redeem mankind. Jesus is a free gift available to everyone who will receive Him.
The best gift you can receive this Christmas — or any day of the year — is Jesus Christ. He will never disappoint you. Have a merry Christmas.
