Dylan Moore did not have any health problems until mid-October.
That’s when the 9-year-old Richmond Hill Elementary School student started having fevers and pain in his joints, according to his mother, Nancy Moore. Dylan went to the doctor and had his blood drawn.
“And sure enough,” Moore said, “they diagnosed him leukemia the next day.”
Doctors diagnosed Dylan with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and also found out that he carries a Philadelphia chromosome, which intensifies cancer cells, making Dylan’s treatment and little trickier and intense, Moore said.
Every three weeks, Dylan has to stay in the hospital for five nights to endure chemotherapy. Doctors also test his bone marrow after each round of treatments.
Some kids going through chemotherapy get bad infections or become violently ill. But so far, Dylan has not had any bad side effects, Moore said.
“He’s doing really well,” she said.
Dylan has been going to the outpatient center at the Backus Children’s Hospital, which is part of Memorial University Health Center in Savannah.
“They have worked miracles already on Dylan,” Moore said. “And he’s doing so well because of them.”
Moore said she was also told that her son has a good chance of making a recovery.
“He should be able to make it,” she said.
The community has come out to support Dylan since his diagnosis. Ella’s in Richmond Hill held a fundraiser on Saturday, and the schools in Richmond Hill are raising funds until Dec. 14.
Moore said the community has been incredibly generous and she wanted to thank everyone who has helped.
“It’s almost impossible to thank everybody,” she said.
Dollars for Dylan, a fund set up to help pay for expenses incurred during Dylan’s treatment, has been established at the Bryan Bank and Trust on Hwy. 144 in Richmond Hill.
The bank can be reached at 756-4444.
