The scripture tells us that “it is more blessed to give than to receive.”
During this season, it is easy to get caught up in the getting mode and become more excited about what we will receive than ways to give. In the end, we will feel more fulfilled and experience more joy if we get into the spirit of giving.
Sometimes we may think that with this rough economy we don’t have much to give, but we need to understand that giving isn’t always monetary.
Many have time and talents that can be used to minister to others in need. Some examples are free babysitting, helping in a soup kitchen or gathering up toys for children in need. There are many avenues for those who are blessed to give as well monetarily.
Sometimes we get caught up in the idea that to make our children happy is to shower them with as many gifts as possible. Studies have proven over and over that kids would rather have quality and quantity time more than they want gifts. In other words, they want more of you than what you can give them.
Instead of spending so much time shopping or going from party to party, spend some time playing games or going to see some lights as a family. Learn to say “no” to nonessential things and “yes” to those you love.
And don’t forget that this time of the year is a time to celebrate the greatest example of giving, and that is Jesus Christ, who gave himself to the world so that we might be saved.
