Independent film “Winter’s Bone” made its debut this year at the Sundance Film Festival and is currently available on DVD. It won the Grand Jury Prize for Dramatic Film. The same award was given in 2008 to “Frozen River,” and it is no surprise because the two films are very much alike.
“Winter’s Bone” follows Ree, a 17-year-old girl who is caring for her disabled mother and two young siblings in the Ozark countryside. Her father is a meth dealer who is arrested and puts his homestead up as bond collateral. When he goes missing afterward, Ree is in danger of losing her home. Ree has two choices. She can give in or she can find her father no matter the cost.
Ree is played by 20-year-old Jennifer Lawrence, a Kentucky-born actress with a bright future ahead of her. She carries “Winter’s Bone” on her very capable shoulders and recently won the role of Mystique in the upcoming comic book movie prequel, “X-Men First Class.” That’s sure to put her in the spotlight. And I hear some of the filming will take place on Jekyll Island.
Lawrence also has been cast in Jodie Foster’s upcoming black comedy, “The Beaver,” starring Mel Gibson and Anton Yelchin.
I couldn’t find a single thing wrong with “Winter’s Bone.” It is based on a Daniel Woodrell novel and exemplifies his body of work, which can be classified as country noir.
Like “Frozen River,” “Winter’s Bone” uncovers an American sub-culture’s beauties and dangers. “Winter’s Bone” seems to tell its story so effortlessly and so realistically and that, as well as Lawrence’s performance, make me a fan! I think you’ll be one, too.
