A fire extinguisher demonstration, visit from Ronald McDonald, helicopter landings, games for kids and refreshments will all be part of Public Safety Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday in the parking lot of Publix on Hwy. 144 south of Richmond Hill.
This is the ninth year that he Bryan County Fire Department, in conjunction with the Bryan County Firefighters Association, will host the event, said Asa Clay, a captain in the Bryan County Fire Department and chairman of the event.
The day will also include a tour of an old fire truck for the kids, a demonstration on how firefighters extract people from a wrecked car and a car bash, where kids can bang on an old car with a hammer.
The Blood Alliance will also host a blood drive in honor of Bryan County firefighter Terry Nielsen, who died earlier this year, and different organizations will set up booths for giveaways.  There will also be a silent auction from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds from the event go to the Terry Nielsen Fund.
The events and games are designed to help educate the public on what first responders do, Clay said.
“[There will be] all kinds of things so that the public can see what the first responders will do for them,” he said. “It’s to get community involved in what we do and what we stand for.”
