The Heritage Bank on Butler Avenue in Midway reportedly was robbed Thursday morning, but local officials are not commenting or releasing details, saying the investigation has been turned over to the FBI.
Bank CEO and Chairman James M. Floyd Jr. did confirm no employees were injured during the crime.
"This morning there was an incident at our Midway branch. Thankfully, all of our employees are safe. They followed the security measures in place and handled the situation like the true professionals they are," Floyd said in a prepared statement provided by John Crowley, the bank's marketing director.
A representative from the Savannah FBI office directed media requests for information to the FBI's public affairs office in Atlanta.
Special Agent Stephen Emmett with the Atlanta Division said at 10:15 a.m. Thursday that FBI agents were en route to the scene of the bank robbery. Emmett said more information would be available later in the day after agents report in.
Liberty County Sheriff's Office Det. Jeffrey Hein would not supply additional details.
"We have no comment at this time. It is still under investigation," he said.
Hein said the incident occurred between midnight and 10 a.m. The detective said authorities do have video surveillance footage, but he wouldn't say whether the tape shows more than one suspect.
The bank branch, which is less than two miles from Interstate 95, has been robbed before.
On July 7, a woman was robbed at gunpoint as she was making a withdrawal from an ATM behind the bank.
In December 2005, a man walked into the bank near closing time and demanded money. He ran from the bank and was believed to have gotten into a vehicle near the corner of Martin and Ferguson roads.
He reportedly fired a small handgun outside the bank, possibly at a customer at the bank's ATM who had started following the suspect.
The bank was also robbed in February 2002. That time a man had broken a window to get inside the building overnight and surprised employees as they were opening for the day.
No arrests have been linked directly to any of the robberies.
