A grand opening ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13 for Thunder Run, a contemporary, combination dining area and bar that already is eliciting “oohs” and “ahhs” from guests who have sampled the food and enjoyed the environment.
Thunder Run replaces Rockets Lounge in Club Stewart.
The public is invited to the opening.
The opening ceremonies begin in the Club Stewart ballroom and will move to Thunder Run for a ribbon cutting. Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Phillips, 3rd ID Deputy Commanding General-Rear, is scheduled to speak. Music will be provided by the 3rd ID Jazz Combo.
About $990,000 was spent to completely gut the 6,200-square-foot Rockets Lounge area and convert it. Thunder Run is modeled after restaurant franchises such as Applebees, Ruby Tuesdays and Houlihan’s and will be operated by Club Stewart staff.
The “all-green” renovation project used only products made in America, including hardware such as nails and screws. The main dining area has dark brown macadamia vinyl floor tile with flame orange used as an accent color. A waterfall — 24 inches wide and 96 inches high — greets patrons as they enter. Sixteen televisions in various locations offer a view from anywhere in the restaurant.
Customers can enjoy the buffet Monday through Friday from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. or order a la carte.
Thunder Run offers a variety of sandwiches, including smoked ham, smoked turkey, Texas-style brisket, two types of Philly cheese steaks (chicken and Cajun) and three types of  paninis — smoked turkey reuben, apple smoked chicken and ham and mac.
The house specialty is a half/rack of St. Louis-style ribs served with two sides and a beverage for $9.95.
For a look at the buffet and a la carte menus, go to www.stewartmwr.com. On the left hand side of the page, click on clubs and dining then click Club Stewart. The Thunder Run menu will appear.
Thunder Run was named after 3rd ID actions in Iraq that ended in the capture of Baghdad. On April 5, 2003, the 3rd ID stunned the world with television images of tanks and Bradley fighting vehicles storming the streets of Baghdad in a probing action known as the first of two “Thunder Runs.” The second Thunder Run moved the 2nd Brigade Combat Team into the government center of Baghdad.
