The 2011 Relay For Life of Richmond Hill event is set for April 1, but that doesn’t mean the annual all-night fundraiser is a laughing matter.
“We didn’t want people thinking that we were making fun of cancer by having the Relay on April 1,” said Relay For Life event chair Civility Bowling. “We’re not. Cancer is not a joke. It’s serious.”
But the theme for next year’s Relay, “Don’t fool around with cancer. It’s no joke,” is a reaction to the fact that the Relay coincides with April Fools Day.
The 2011 theme and event date were announced Monday during the Relay For Life of Richmond Hill campaign kick-off at the Richmond Hill City Center in J.F. Gregory Park.
That evening, Bowling also announced that the fundraising goal for the 2011 Relay is $107,000, an increase of $17,000 from last year.
To reach the goal, the organization has planned a number of fundraisers, including but not limited to, a chicken finger dinner sponsored by Beef ‘O’ Brady’s and a Miss Relay pageant. Funds will go to the American Cancer Society for the prevention and treatment of cancer.
“I think Relay For Life is so wonderful,” said Dottie McCarthy, a Relay participant who was diagnosed with cancer in December. “I see all of these young people taking time with their families to help, and it’s really great.”
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a national program that raises awareness and funds to fight cancer. Each year, more than 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities in the United States walk in the Relay, which goes through the night and can last up to 24 hours.
