Coach Butler’s Lady Redskins can’t seem to find the win, but with powerhouse Liz Cross, they know it’s in there somewhere.
Friday night the girls were hit hard by Jenkins County with a 59-26 loss, and another loss on Saturday night to ECI 42-32.
The Jenkins County Lady Eagles began Friday night’s game with a turnover and a foul which put Lady Redskin Tara Miles at the free-throw line and the Redskins up 1-0. Sadly, this would be the only time the Lady Redskins held the lead. The Jenkins County girls put 6 unanswered points on the board forcing Coach Butler of the Lady Redskins to call time less than half way through the first quarter.
The Lady Redskins made up much lost ground in the first few minutes of the second quarter, but their momentum faded quickly forcing Coach Butler to use his third timeout. The fatigued Lady Redskins had trouble making baskets with a 29-11 deficit staring them in the face.
The second half began with the Lady Eagles challenging Bryan County on every possession. With nine Eagles points and only three Redskin points Coach Butler used his fourth timeout halfway through the third quarter. A few unanswered Bryan County points and the Lady Eagles bench were forced to call a timeout. As ground was slowly recovered for the Lady Redskins in the third quarter, the forth quarter saw the ground fall out from under the Bryan County girls as Liz Cross cold not covert under the basket. The final score 59-26 Jenkins County.
Scoring – Liz Cross 13, Amber Smith 6, Mitzi Cross 4, Monteza Bishop 2, and Tara Miles 1.
In Saturday night’s home game against the ECI Lady Bulldogs, the Lady Redskins struggled once again. Neither team had much luck sinking shots, but the Lady Bulldogs powered for several key offensive rebounds that gave them second shots at the basket and domination of the court. Again the answer to Coach Butler’s problems seemed to be a lack of rebounding.
The Bryan County girls would make up a little lost ground in the third quarter with a few offensive rebounds of their own. The ECI 10 point lead grew smaller as the Lady Redskins capitalized on ECI turnovers and Monteza Bishop proved she could make offensive rebounds as well.
After a poor performance in the opening quarters, the Lady Redskins stepped up the intensity, but simply ran out of time to make up the deficit. As the horn sounded, it was ECI on top 42-32.
Scoring – Amber Smith 14, Liz Cross 10, Tara Miles 5, Brittany Slater 2, Mitzi Cross 1.
