Lanier Primary teacher Alison Holcombe said she wants students to remember her in part as “the long-haired lady who always had a smile on her face.”
Holcombe had plenty to smile about Thursday night. The bubbly teacher was named Bryan County Schools 2010 systemwide teacher of the year.
Holcombe, also the Lanier Primary teacher of the year, was picked by a committee of educators from a group of nine school-level winners called “the best of the best” by Superintendent John Oliver.
Earlier, Holcombe said she got into teaching to “help people and make a difference,” and thanked family and co-workers for their support.
“I feel that being an educator is the most rewarding profession you can have,” Holcombe said. “I love working with children and the challenges they bring.”
Her competition included Kimberly Long, Bryan County Elementary; Cassandra Donaldson, Bryan County Middle School; Ginnie Sherrod, Bryan County High School; Teresa Deneen, Richmond Hill Primary; Marianne Zamjohn, Richmond Hill Elementary: Mary Matthews, Carver Elementary; Mary Jo Fina, Richmond Hill Middle; and Wes Valentine, Richmond Hill High School. They were selected by their fellow teachers.
Lanier principal Dr. Patti Newman said previously that Holcombe does what it takes to help kids learn.
“Although it sounds like a cliché, Alison Holcombe is the teacher every parent wants for their child: one who is patient and kind, but she is also that teacher who has high expectations for student achievement,” Newman said.
All of the teachers received gift bags. Holcombe received a $500 stipend, as well.
